About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

And so onto the T&M

Tuesday 22nd October

I must admit since that alternator started acting up both of us had slept really badly, all that worry about the batteries still holding some charge but not now...yea....no more sitting in the dark and only allowing the TV on when there was a program to watch. This morning then, we did lie in but still managed to get underway a tad before 9 am. The mist was rising from the water and a glimpse of the sun held a promise of a decent day. At one point though a strange rainbow effect appeared between the clouds and sun.

The return journey to Great Hayward was most uneventful. Got a photo of Ian stepping over the bottom gates, something I also used to do until my nerve gave out when one of the running boards wobbled alarmingly as I landed.

Normally I decry the amount of vegetation on the towpath but this was seeded with wildflowers and looked wonderful.

Not far from the wildflowers this was on the towpath next to a boat. What concerned me was why was the Drake locked in. Not for eating, I hope!

Deptmore lock and we met a lovely family on their first narrowboat holiday. They had left from Anglo Welsh yesterday and struggled with Tixal lock (first lock on the Staffs and Worcs) and although had been told of the locking procedure by Anglo Welsh staff, was very grateful for our help.  Watching them it became obvious why the first lock was such a chore. Not only did they drop the paddles before the boat was halfway up, thinking the boat had completely ascended, but they were also pushing at the gate wondering why it wouldn't open. Ian soon set them straight.

Approaching the wide

Great Hayward junction and a right turn back onto the T&M
We descended Haywood lock and found a quiet spot with only one other boat moored. A generator was also on this boat so didn't feel quite so bad firing ours into life.

Solar panels putting some charge back into the batteries.

And wildlife,
