About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

There was a sign at the bottom, but not at the top!

I again had a miserable night, those bites itch like mad and not wanting to disturb Ian, didn't want to get out of bed for the cream. I tried desperately not to scratch, so difficult though! Anyway, before we went to bed we watched again for the Buck Moon. This site has trees surrounding the area and only caught glimpses of it behind the branches. No way was I going outside again in an attempt of a better photo!!!!

We woke to rain! So much for spending the day on the beach! Never having been to Filey, and as we were in the area, may as well go anyway.

A huge car park at Filey Country Park was where we ended up. Right on the top of a cliff, the views were pretty spectacular. It did mean though that somehow we had to get down to the beach. Before descending, we walked along the cliff ridge.

We found a way down from there, looked a bit precarious but doable we thought. Hmm, little did we know how challenging it would get!

The first part was a bit iffy, had to watch one's footing but then we encountered a deep drop from a step followed by ground that was extremely rugged and hard to get past. Trouble was we were already halfway, and going back up didn't impress me one little bit. Instead we carried on with Ian leading the way. Gosh it was tough going. If it hadnt been for Ian to hang onto, I would never have made it down.

We got to within several feet of the bottom, and the only obstacle left was wooden steps. Easy we thought. Oh dear...wrong again...because so near to completing the task, we found two of the steps to be missing.

I watched as Ian with his long legs managed to get down, me though had a different problem. Knees for a start, bending too much was agony, but it was my only option on getting down. Ian, bless him, took most of my weight and without quite knowing how my leg reached the bottom step leaving the other high in the air, it's a wonder I didn't pull a muscle! And once on solid ground, a notice caught our attention.

Now why wasn't there one at the top?

Reaching sea level Ian checked the tide times, All this would be underwater once the tide turned, and I suppose we should have checked before going down. It was okay though because high tide wasn't until until 17.55 and it was just after midday, so that was alright then.

Bottom left and that's where we climbed down from. The rest is the walk along the rocks and a long man made concrete walkway.

Filey Beach, wow, a glorious 5-mile stretch of golden sand lay before us, but before heading onto it, we walked the bit of Filey Brigg first. Gosh, it had some amazing rock pools, unfortunately apart from one shrimp, not a crustacean to be seen.

Back toward the beach and a fairly long walk toward the ramp leading up to the promenade. Here we found a burger bar, so cheeseburgers and coffee bought. One of the last things the girl serving us said as she handed  us our food was, watch out for the Gulls, they are thieving B's. Laughing, we held on tight to our burgers, but one woman wasn't that lucky. She was just about to take a bite when a Gull swooped down and took it clean out of her hands! Well, the look on her face was priceless. It made us even more determined not to give them any opportunity to steal ours!

The walk back uphill to MB was only a tad easier. A short walk back along the beach, the yacht had a launching ramp. Up a very steep incline before coming to steps leading straight up. I didn't count because all I could think of was 'must keep going'. I'm sure there were more than a hundred though. It certainly got the old ticker pumping! The same camp site was to be used tonight, hoped to sit out with a glass of beer, the sun had been out at Filey. Not at the site though, in fact the cloud cover made it feel cold. Never mind, the next few days are set to improve, we go to Scarborough tomorrow.

And wildlife.

Intrepid I&I - definitely the Is have it!

Forget how damaged the path was, I would not have been game being so close to the edge of those banks!

Intrepid, I say!

With admiration, Mxx
