About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Lorry queues? Not as bad as we feared.

Who would have thought that a small church car park would be so busy first thing in the morning, and it wasn't even a Sunday! Yep, that was the park 4 night we chose last night. Dog walkers all turning up in their cars, some as early as 5.30am, must be good walking tracks around here! We did find this millennium beacon right opposite the church graveyard. Good spot for it perched as it was on top of the hill.

Had a slight dilemma this morning. We wanted to go to Walmer Castle, a good 90-minute journey but that time could be cut by 30 minutes if we took the M20. With all that was going on at Dover at the moment, we ummed and ahed; should we bite the bullet and take the motorway anyway. It was agreed, after listening to the local news, that we may as well try, because surely a through lane would be open. We hit the near empty motorway, and it wasn't until we got roughly a mile from the Port of Dover that the lorry queues started.

The white cliffs of Dover, we will be seeing plenty of them in the next few days.

Walmer Castle...magnificent and the grounds were a far cry from that of Sissinghurst's bedraggled look. No photos were allowed inside the castle rooms, but I can tell you they were impressive.

Plenty of photos of the grounds, I took loads but most are flawed because of a nasty black fleck on the inside of the camera lens. I did manage to rid of that spot by using photoshop on some of them, but it's such a long-winded process! I may have to give up on this camera and start using my phone instead!

Struggled a bit trying to find somewhere to stop tonight. We had thought about a place near the St Margaret's Cliff but the road leading down to it had warning signs of dangerous bends. I really didn't relish the thought of getting stuck so that idea was abandoned. Phoning a Brit Stop pub called the Coastguard they informed us a function was on tonight so parking in their car park was a no-go. Right....one more try at a CL site, at a place called Coldred near Dover. It's a lovely smallholding site with sheep, chickens and..... Cockrell's....arghhhhhh.   I wonder how early they will start their cock-a-doodledoing!

And today's wildlife
