About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Hot journey home

 Monday 18

Penistone Hill would have been the perfect spot to sit out the heat. A constant breeze blew all night and was still keeping us cool at 9 am. Today was set to be hot, and the journey home didn't appeal one little bit. We do have air condition on the van, it doesn't work very well but at least it gets the cab at a more acceptable temperature. With the diesel prices so high, Ian was reluctant to turn it on, so it was to be open windows for the whole journey back.

Leaving Penistone hill, the sat nav took us down some very narrow roads and through small villages. Not ideal when cars parked on one side, narrowed the road considerably and when two vans came toward us...well you can imagine the rest. Actually they had to reverse. We had at least 4 cars behind MB so impossible for us to go back.

On the motorway, we expected hold ups but apart from one short queue due to a car suddenly breaking down on one of those 'smart sections' and invasive manoeuvres having to be quickly done from a lorry as well as the sudden braking. it was a relatively easy journey. It also went very quickly, we were listening to the audio book Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.  In fact, we were home in time for lunch!

OMG FS was hot! All the curtains were closed but still the temperature was unbearable. In fact, I took this from our temperature gauge today (Tuesday) Unreal, how much heat the basin holds. At the canal side it was a good 5 deg cooler.

38 inside FS and 45 outside.

Three loads of washing done, each load took about an hour to dry. Ian braved the soaring temperature in MB. The heater elements had to come out from the heater, and it took ages.  Most of the time he was lying on the floor trying to remove the casing. Anyway it's done and the new bits ordered.

We stay until the dermatologist releases Ian. That red protrusion from between his forefinger and thumb will probably have to be removed. It's just a question of when.

There is wildlife today, not what we wanted to see though. Spiders, inside and outside the boat. Webs had to be brushed aside and Ian was called constantly to capture and remove the beasties. This was the only one I took a photo of. The rest had already been removed.
