About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

The rebel in us

Amazing what will break the ice. Ready for bed and before shutting out the night, this was seen.

Well, I grabbed the camera, Ian asked what was up and I replied without thinking. Hmm, I was still mad at him, but this was too good not to share. We got talking, a bit disjointed on my part, but I went to bed thinking maybe I had over reacted, not that I would ever admit that to him!

Thursday there will be a super moon.

Shame that box was in the way but with those midges baying for my blood, no way was I going to give them the opportunity by venturing outside..

July 10th

So first thing next morning, Ian suggested going to Bellingham and getting a pack of ice. I was by now talking to him again, and he did apologise. Placing the the bought packet of ice cubes in the freezer and keeping the van in the shade, helped. So today we walked to see the Osprey nest. It's roughly 1.5 miles from the reservoir, and across the other side of the water, and managed to see the female and watched as the male arrived with a fish.

From there we walked to the wave chamber. The path was closed due to all the fallen trees, but the devil in us pushed our way past the barrier and set off. Ah, maybe not the best idea we have ever had. Loads of fallen trees, but undeterred, we clambered over them all. Got to the chamber, squeezed ourselves through the narrowest of doors, closed the door as instructed and sat listening to the waves being amplified. A small hole at the top allowed the light on the wave motion to illuminate a round white circle. Hmm, not sure if it was worth the walk, but at least we had made it.

Of course, we chose a different path back. Big mistake. Over several more trees, each one getting more and more difficult, until about half a mile of difficult terrain, our way was completely blocked and we had to turn back.

m

3 hours we were out. Gosh, I was glad to be back at MB. We then had a three-mile drive to Waterside, where the boat to take us Osprey sighting was already at the jetty. We had an hour to kill, lan made the most of it.

A few like-minded people were ready to board, some with their huge lens's putting me and several others to shame. The big question, would we see Osprey hunting? The answer to that was yes. At least 4 looking for a fish to take back to the chicks, and one had already caught and was flying back to the nest.

These photos are not a patch on those with super lenses but with m, their photos were amazing, so much detail. Hmm, I may have lens envy!
