About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

zero to....HOW FAST!

Sunday 12th December

It was a beautiful warm start to the day. If only the towpath had been lower and FS higher out of the water Ian could have slapped some bitumen on the hull to disguise all those scratches (which I was told was all my fault) "And they are more like huge gouges, not minor scratches" he told me. My voice rose slightly. "It was those fierce bywashes on the Llangollen and Shroppie...couldn't be helped...like to see you do any better...on and on I whined! Anyway we laughed it off and agreed the hull was supposed to have a few war wounds, showed we had been on an adventure.  What was annoying, the temperature was above 10 degrees which would have been perfect to do the job. Oh well, another time will come no doubt.

So we awaited the arrival of daughter, son-in-law and grand children. A meal was booked for 1 pm at the Rising Sun so we had all morning to twiddle our thumbs. Not one to stay idle, a few jobs were done, including giving the bathroom a good clean. Amazing how much dust accumulates on the shelves behind the cassettes and towels and it was just as I was slightly off balance reaching as far back on the shelf that I could, that I felt FS tip. Blimey, I came rushing out just in time to see the boat moored in front of us go past. Talk about bat out of hell! How he managed to get to that speed within a boat length was beyond me and he made no attempt to throttle back even passing the rest of the offside boats. We were not impressed.

He had obviously winded because not 5 minutes later he came flying past us again at the same speed. And then, walking to the pub, well... dog poo....loads of it, gosh we had to be careful where we walked and all looked to be of the same size, colour and consistency, which in my mind meant only one thing....same dog did the deed!  Now it would be wrong of me to assume it was that boater's dog but to put it plainly, it was seen by itself and strange how all the piles were only in the vicinity of his boat!

Anyway we did have a lovely day with the family. They left us around 6 pm, we watched Strictly the results and then the worrying news when Boris came and interrupted the viewing schedule with more doom and gloom about the new Omicron variant! We all need to keep safe and I urge everyone reading this to get their booster jab. God forbid Christmas will be cancelled because hospital cases go up. We didn't spend it with the family last year, we really want to spend it with the family this year.
