About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

That was some walk!

We never got to Scar cave, ah...hang on...well that's not strictly true. You see we had great intentions of going early to beat the masses, a tad to early it seemed because the cave didn't open until 10 am and we arrived at 9! Change of plans and we headed for Ingleton instead.

The waterfall trail, consisting of 6 waterfalls, was not a free walk! Part of it goes through private land, and the landowner charges to enter the walk, which does go to help with the upkeep of the paths and trails, so I suppose is justifiable. £16 for both of us still seemed a little extreme.

When we went to pay, the choice of direction was also no longer permitted. A one way system in place and all because of social distancing. To be fair, the explanation was because of the narrow paths and steps. And we certainly found that out shortly after our walk commenced. From the start it was up hill, negotiating loose stones and boulders. By the time we reached the first and then the second waterfall, I was beginning to think I had bitten off more than I could chew.

A third of the way along and a rest was needed. This was some of the terrain

Off course the waterfalls did make the walk worthwhile, but oh how wonderful to complete the 6 miles and get back to MB. Not only was the knees screaming in agony, but the feet too!

As it was still early afternoon, deciding to go back to Scar cave seemed like a good idea. So we turned up in time for the 3 pm tour. But oh....when I saw that this was one of the longest cave systems in the UK and that there was a flight of 97 steps and it was a mile long and it would take 80 minutes, I gave Ian one of those pleading looks of please, my knees won't stand any more steps. He took the hint and he suggested coming back in the morning when I had rested sufficiently to attempt the tour.

So tonight we found a site with water and elsan. I'm in desperate need of doing some washing but trying to find a washing machine on a caravan site was almost non-excitant and those that did have a machine wanted to charge anything from 30 to 40 pounds a night! Nop handwashing it was to be then!

And wildlife, first that little owl.

Not just a stone wall. Somewhere amongst the stone is the owl.

Another Meadow Pipit.
