About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Tasmania here we come.

Friday, a day of washing, packing and running about like a pair demented. It's only a three-week trip but it was a question of what shall we take? Tasmania's weather is so very different from mainland Australia and can be at least 10 deg cooler. We decided on one bag between the two, had it all packed and then as soon as we got up early Saturday morning Ian persuaded me to change our plan and take two after all. "What if we buy gifts for the family?" "How will we get them home?" So a frantic rearrange was necessary but thankfully we were still ready for 8.15 am when my brother said it was time to go.

We had another good flight with the only bit of turbulence as the plane was coming into land at Tasmania. From the green of Sydney due to all the rain, Hobart was very brown! There was also signs of fire but regrowth had already started.

At Hobart Airport

A short taxi ride took us to the Cruisin hire company. At first glance, the motorhome looked lovely, well under a year old it should do! But it had already had damaged to the rear bodywork, a large dent by the rear wheel. Not our problem but we made sure that would not go down as something we had done! Soon found out how badly stocked it was though with only the very basic of utensils. Two of everything and not a spare to be had. Only one pan plus a frying pan, no loo roll holder in the loo. In fact, not even a cupboard in the bathroom to put toothbrushes etc. No rubbish bin, storage almost non-existent and more importantly where do we keep the booze??? But we are so looking forward to this adventure that it matters not. It will be as it will be and we will make the best of it. So long as we don't have any of the previous experiences with the RP all will be well.

First stop was finding a supermarket but that wasn't easy as all the major shops had parking underground and this motorhome was too tall to go under the barrier! In the end, Ian found a Coles supermarket at Kingston with a normal car park which, would you believe, was near the River Derwent! One problem with the Supermarkets over here...no booze aisle. We needed booze...what is a holiday without wine or beer? so it was another drive to find a liquor store. Finally we were ready to find a stop for the night and would you believe we found a great one at Gilwell Park Scout Camp for $20 a night and right in the heart of the forest and we even had our first visitor...a wild Wallaby!
