About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Brown lands and blowholes

Before we came to Tasmania everyone we spoke to said the same, could be cold and wet, a far cry from mainland Australia. So far we have found it hot and very dry. In fact, parts of Tassie are having drought conditions and water restrictions are in force. Leaving Sorell this morning it was so noticeable that no rain had fallen in quite some time, everywhere was dry and very brown. Yet 50k further North and suddenly the landscape changed and a hint of green appeared. Still a far cry from rain that is so desperately needed. For two Brits on holiday, the good weather is very welcome but for those farmers trying to cope in these conditions, life must be hard.

Today we headed for Swansea. At Piermont Retreat and Restaurant we had arranged to meet Sally's sister Ali (Sally is my brother's partner) for lunch. Ali works there and with the job goes some benefits. Showing us around was one of them as was the excellent service and wine!

What a great place to work.

Spiky Bridge completed by the convicts in the1800's as a coach road between Swansea and Hobart.
Three hours went way to fast and sad to say goodbye...for now. Back this way in two weeks so should see more of each other then.

Our stop for the night was a small place by the sea called Bicheno. Ali recommended having a walk along the shoreline to see if the seals were around and have a look at the blowhole. Oh, I took plenty of photos of the blowhole and being focused on catching the moment didn't realise my feet were being attacked by nasty biting insects. Methinks I may well suffer tonight!

Excitement is building as this evening we go on a 2-hour tour to see the Tasmanian Devil. Not sure if I will get any photos as it will be dusk and I'm pretty sure no flash will be allowed.

And the wildlife,
