About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Hmmm, padlocks or bras?

Wow, another really rough night. The weather has certainly turned for the worse. Shame because the sunset gave a promise to a fine day.

The rain was relentless, neither of us wanted to head off in that weather and nothing planned so we didn't leave till well after 9am. What we did do before we left Bluff was to go find the other end of that anchor chain at Stirling Point and of course, we couldn't leave until we got that photo of the fingerposts.

We then headed up to Bluff Hill Lookout. Very steep ascent needing low gear to reach the top. Coming back down was a hang onto your seat jobbie. Low gear on the way down using the engine as a brake and foot hard down on the brake pedal especially at those bends. Was that smell coming from the brakes? The views though. were exceptional such a shame the weather wasn't brilliant.

Our plan was to travel back towards Wanaka via Invercargill, Gore, Alexandra and Cromwell. A quick dump stop at Invercargill and we headed off towards Gore.

Somehow at Gore, we turned left onto H94 instead of right onto H90. All the highways look the same and very few have any sort of number along the route. Got to a place called Riversdale and I searched the route to see where we were. Laughingly I told Ian it didn't exist and must have been left off the map. It wasn't until we had driven for over an hour and stopped for a coffee that Ian discovered we had got on the wrong highway. Oh, dear...I was map reading and what do they say about the divorce rate and women reading maps? "I suppose we will have to turn back," he said looking at me with menace on his mind. "No", I said sheepishly. "We could continue on this road and go via Queenstown...again" Begrudgingly he looked on Wiki Camp for another campsite, dare I mention to him I wanted a proper site tonight so I could do some washing? Anyway, in the end, he agreed that it could have been as much his fault as well as mine, so peace and harmony were once more restored. I  will just add that cutting across the country was not an option. It's them Mountains you see most inconsiderate to be in the way!

H94 Not like our roads back home. For instance hardly any cars.

I may have been distracted at Gore because of the train.

The only site we found with a washing machine was the Top 10 at Kingston. Not a site I will recommend to anyone. Only two washing machines and one dryer for the whole of the park, two shower cubicles, three toilets and four hand basins and to top it all the bloody light went out whilst I was in the shower! The hairdryer was a waste of space, stayed on for all of 30 seconds, switched off and refused to start again! Apparently, this site is to be upgraded, more log cabins and kitchen facilities. What about those showers and washing machines!

Not sure if we will make Wanaka tomorrow. I want to go back to Puzzling World mainly because I enjoyed it so much but we need gifts for the Grandchildren. Those metal puzzles should keep them happy for hours.

And the heading?

Saw a long line of bras on a fence before we arrived at Cardona (no photos) and once again along the H94. Beats the Uk's padlocks locked onto fences, bridges, gates etc. It has become an iconic feature in this part of South Island. You can read about it HERE

Irene, you will be pleased to note that David and I made a similar wrong turning when we were in the South Island - I think ours was from Alexandra and we found after 20 minutes or so that none of the signs said the place names we were expecting and the GPS kept telling us to turn down really rough looking side roads... The GPS had the right idea but we hadn't consulted it!

Love the bra fence - goes with the jandals at Tongaporutu!

If you haven't been there yet, get yourselves in to the Mackenzie Country - it is wonderful: Alexandra, Cromwell, Fairlie, Twizel, Ranfurly ...

Big hugs, Mxx
