About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

How's that for a house move and a damsel in distress.

Tuesday 4th Feb

To think we were sitting in the sun last night enjoying a beer and here we are once again in the throes of torrential downpours. In fact, the South of the Island had flood warnings issued especially around Fiordland and Milford Sound. This photo is from Sky News taken on the road to Milford Sound.

This could have been at the same place as the waterfall I photographed when we went in search of the Kea.

Where those people are standing, on the other side of the road is the waterfall.

And the waterfall.
What seems so bizarre is at 3am this morning both of us were awake and staring up at millions of stars and within 30 minutes an electric storm came through  The rain then started and hasn't stopped since.

On the road, we made it to Twizel. One certainly sees some strange sights. For instance, a house move with a difference, being taken by truck in two halves!

Love the sign on the lead car. House Follows๐Ÿ˜‚
Stopping at the Marino centre at Tarras and the story of one sheep that evaded the shearers for 6 years and developed a massively thick coat, came to my attention. Shrek was the name and is somewhat of a celebrity around these parts. Click Here to read his story,

With so much rain the Lindis Pass was shrouded in cloud. Didn't stop two stupid Brits going for a walk to look at the non-exsistant views! It was also here that Ian got accosted by a young good looking female having problems with her car and she wanted a "man that could" help her out. My "man that can" was very quick in offering his help!

Heading towards Twizel we came across the most beautiful of sights, turquoise waters at the Salmon farm and Dam at Lake Ruataniwha. Apparently, this is the only man-made Lake in the Mackenzie Region.

Salmon Farm

The Dam and the briefest glimpse of the sun.

Wanting to go to Mt Cooks village (Aoraki) tomorrow we may decide the road conditions are too dangerous. We found a great website called Weather Geek. It shows live photos of weather in the South Islands regions. Mt Cook is NOT looking promising!

Campsite at Lake Wardle near Twizel.
Oh and by the way...discovered yet another issue with RP. The roof above the window area is leaking around the seals and Ian found another leak when he felt his head getting wet in the bathroom! Cushions have had to be removed 'cos these also make up part of the bed. It is still raining!!!!
