About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Failed to find the exit...yet again

We have less than a week left before we fly to Australia so lots to cram in before that happens.  Had another night of rain which continued well into the morning and because I had given the wrong directions yesterday, the route now was the same as over a week ago. It was back over the Crown Range Pass leading up to Crown Terrace Lookout. Far cry from the glorious sunny weather then and the dull misty rainy weather now.

Leaving the Top 10 site.

The road leading up to the Lookout.

At Crown Terrace today

And on the 27th Jan

The road towards Wanaka was estill very picturesque even in the rain.  I noticed those Lupins had all but gone over.

Those photos of the Bras on the fence yesterday was nothing compared to what we stopped to look at in Cardona today.

At Wanaka, the weather started to improve. At least the rain had stopped and visibility improved.

Lake Wanaka as we drove in.

And at the lakeside.
Puzzle World was about 2 km further on highway 84. Not so busy that we couldn't find a parking spot. Most of the illusions were the same as last time and still great fun to do. It was the maze that we wanted to conquer.  Three years ago we managed to find three of the four corner huts but not the way out. We cheated and came out of an emergency exit door. So determination was our motto, we will do the four huts and we will find the exit. For over an hour we were trapped in that blasted maze. My Fitbit watch said we had already walked over two miles and yes we managed to find the four huts but no we still couldn't find the exit. Hot and bothered (yes the sun had finally put in an appearance,) we once again snuck out of the emergency exit door. Nothing for it we will have to return in a few years time to try again!

Ian was standing upright

Leaving Puzzle World it was back to Wanaka to find an optician as my glasses were in urgent need of attention. The lens fell out several weeks ago and I was reliant on the second pair that luckily made its way into the luggage. And then there were my prescription sunglasses. Way back when we had not long arrived on North Island I happened upon a Spec Saver and asked them to make the side temples fit my head better,  They were much to loose and kept falling off my nose. This was done by a chap who insisted the only way it could be done safely was by removing the lenses. When I got them back and stupidly only tried them on for fit, realised later I couldn't see a thing out of them!   The lenses had been put in the wrong way round! To late for me to return as we had already left the area. The opticians in Wanaka not only replace the screw and lens on my readers but changed the lenses over on the sunglasses and only charged $10. Amazing how clear everything looks now that I can see again!

Lake Wanaka again in a different light.

Views on the H6 towards Cromwell

Never been on this road before so Ian decided to travel down to Lake Dunstan and stop for the night at Lowburn Harbour.

And wildlife today. (before you all have a go it was only a small peice of the wholemeal crust)

A Pipet I think
