About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Laptop not quite what I expected.

 Friday 8th

Wow...the price of red diesel at the mo, Sawley Marina wanted £1.40 and that was just to fill the cans. Goodness knows how much a 40/60 split would be. Needless to say, only Jim (Dire Straits) filled his cans there.  Our tank had been filled at Shobnall back in January, and at 80p a litre was then a reasonable price. So with two of our cans empty, we thought Shobnall was the place for us to fill both cans and top up the tank.

No wind today, a far cry from yesterday's bad weather. In fact, these photos shows just how 24 hours can make all the difference weather wise.

The footbridge to Mercia Marina, 7.30 am.

No wind made the reverse to the pump at Shobnall a doddle. Ian just about remembered to stop by the small footbridge, it was down today, and they wouldn't have thanked us for wiping it out.

Surprisingly, the price here was still a whopping £1.20 litre, although only yesterday it had come down from £1.30 so glad it was today we filled. Sign of  times and of Putin's war...oh sorry... Putin's 'special military operation'! 90 litres of fuel taken, 40 in the cans and 50 in the tank. Then a nice surprise as we met up with Fred and Lisa (Chyandour) who now moors at Shobnall Marina. If you had travelled the length of the Ashby you would have found them right by the terminus, they had a mooring there for a year or two. The conversation was a brief catch-up, but it won't be long before we meet again. They are due to help at the ECP&DA rally next May.

A wave farewell, and we headed off for the Morrison mooring which today had, thankfully, plenty of space. Back in January, you would have been lucky to squeeze a cardboard box in between the many moored boats. Anyway, off we went to get the laptop and very excited to get it back to FS. Of course, I had to curb my enthusiasm because it had to be charged first, but an hour later I fired it into life and started to fill in the required questions. Then....oh....the start-up screen seemed odd! Not the Windows 10 I was used to. How odd because Ian deliberately looked for a Windows 10 laptop and thought he had found the perfect one. On Curry's site it said this laptop was a Windows 10 with a free upgrade to 11 when available.  Of course with 11 now up and running, on the first start-up of this laptop, I must have  installed Windows 11 without realising, so now I am trying to find my way around this computor. Oh well, it's done now. Just hope all problems with this upgrade have been sorted. Remember all the trouble with 10 when that came out?  You can read about the first issues HERE

Ian then tried to remove the hard drive from my old computor. It's not as easy as he first thought! More investigation is necessary.

For the weekend we thought Branston Water Park would be the ideal place to stop, loads of walks for Toffee and relatively quiet. Tad noisy when we arrived though! Building work is still going on and the diggers with the beeb, beeb when reversing, was enough to drive one to distraction. Doubt work will be going on over the weekend, so looking forward to winding down and chilling out.

Irene you might consider asking Ian to install Windows Classic Start on your new laptop. (https://www.lifewire.com/classic-start-menu-in-windows-11-5189891) Doing this will give Windows 11 the appearance of Windows 10.
