About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Nowt so queer as folk!

While waiting for Jim and Jenn to arrive, the port side of FS was given a good clean. Tomorrow we wind so it's the only chance to get the side, windows and cabin top a good scrub.

10 am and a text from Jenn to say they had descended Weston lock. Right, that meant they should be with us in 20 minutes. So FS was moved forward in readiness for Dire Straits to slot in behind. I then did something in normal circumstances I would frown at! Not wanting another boat to stop behind us I actually set up my chair, rod and net right in the middle of the vacant mooring. I was pretty sure it was too early for another boat to stop so in away I didn't feel I was actually hogging the mooring. If it had been in the afternoon I probably wouldn't have done that and just kept everything crossed that they arrived before anyone else. Anyway all was good, the only boat seen went straight past and Jim and Jenn arrived not long after.

Two things today made me wonder about folk! First a hired day boat came past with a couple on board. He was steering and she...well in her hand was a frying pan and on the roof a lit primus stove. "That's a first" I said, and she laughed and said "Bacon and eggs for breakfast!"

The second was watching Jenn cleaning one of the nature signs put up by the Conservation Trust Volunteers!!! Blimey Jenn, are you going to do every sign on the system??

The idea to have a BBQ was very nearly a non-starter as the afternoon started to get bl**dy cold, and we began to think sitting outside wouldn't be a good idea. In fact jumpers and long trousers went on (Ian and Jenn initially wore shorts) and the suggestion of cooking on the boats was mentioned. But us boaters are made of sterner stuff so at 4 pm the barbie was lit and Jim became the' chef of the day' cooking burgers and sausages. And actually once the wind had died down, it felt a lot warmer, so we stayed out longer than anticipated.

I can't believe tomorrow we head back to MK. All that way again, 100 plus miles and 40 odd locks and not forgetting the two tunnels! Groan...and we have to be there before the 23rd!

And wildlife

This tiny lizard was in the Jenns BBQ bag. (roughly 2 inches long) It was dead but can anyone recognise what species of lizard it is?
