About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Vikings, Minster and Treasure House

Hmm...having issues with the grey water waste tank. We noticed this problem on our first trip out, the water took forever to drain away and when we had a shower, nearly flooded the bathroom. Ian has tried everything to try and rectify this, from pulling the pipe off the holding tank to placing MB on levelling blocks so the water could run one way or another. No blockage was found, and he is still as baffled by the situation. Good job MB has a long guarantee 'cos it may have to go back to the dealer to be sorted.

Off to York today and couldn't have been easier to drive in. A Park and Ride 2 miles away and a 20-minute bus ride into the town centre. Armed with bus passes, I was very surprised that money still had to change hands to the driver. Only £1.20 each so not to bad and actually very good value considering the all day parking was free.

York was quiet. No crowds to fight our way through and every attraction within easy walking distance. With the Jorvic experience not booked until 11.20 am, and because our timings into York was way out, we took ourselves off to the River.

The Jorvic Viking Centre was very well managed. Only one household allowed in the gondolas so we had one to ourselves. Enjoyed the whole experience, although I think they may have dumbed down the smells. Seem to remember 30 years ago having to hold my nose 'cos it was so pungent. Maybe our masks masked the stink.

Next was York Minster. Beautiful building and a first ever visit for us.

The Treasurer's House was but a stones throw from the Minster, a NT place we had planned to visit. When we tried to book though, found all the slots taken but thought we would go anyway, just in case. Only 6 people allowed in at any one time and 4 of them hadn't turned up for the 3 pm slot so yep, we were allowed in.

With so much still to see and do around the York area, we have booked to stay on the camp site for another couple of night.

And some more images of York.

??? Why is David Attenborough submerged?

And wildlife today

This worm must have been nearly 15" long!

We had a similar problem with the grey water tank when we hired in Australia . It turned out to be a blocked tank breather pipe. This prevented the air in the tank escaping as we tried to add our waste water to the tank. Hope this might be useful.

Glad to hear you are enjoying my home city of York. It must be rather nice to be able to go places without the hords of people that usually fill the place.
It may just be a typo but it's Treasurer's House not Treasure's House.
Enjoy the rest of your time there.

If waste water isn't flowing in or out of the holding tank, it suggests that a tank vent pipe (assuming one is fitted?) could be blocked. If there is an easily accessible "P trap" (or syphon) under the kitchen sink, try removing it and see if this helps with draining the tank and getting rid of waste water from the shower.

Hi Mike and Dave,

Ian has also thought of that and has checked the pipe and so far has found nothing wrong. It seems strange that when we use a sink plunger and force air down, the water drains away which still suggests this is the problem. We may be having a 'lazy day' on Sunday, so this could give Ian the opportunity to delve deeper. Thanks for the information though, if we find out what the problem is I will let you know.

Hi Pip and Mick,
We are loving it here in York, so much to see and do and thanks for pointing out my mistake. Not a typing error, more like me not reading the pamphlet properly. I will amend the post. Xx

"When we use a sink plunger and force air down"

That will blow out the water sitting in the trap, and allow the tank to "Breathe" through the sink plughole. It seems to confirm my suggestion of temporarily removing it, and I note the comment from "Mike" saying a blocked breather is a possibility. I wonder if the previous owner left the tank full of waste for a long time, allowing some gunge to build up in the breather pipe - which will (most likely) be of a small diameter, and easily blocked. If Ian can't find the problem, at least you should have a "work round" until you can get MB back to the dealer.
