About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Dungeons and a gas issue

Another trip into York this morning to visit the York Dungeon and although our tickets were for 10.30 am and because we once again got our timings into the city wrong and arrived way too early, we managed to tag onto the 10 am show. Brilliant experience! Funny and scary in places Ian got pulled out twice to perform for the peasants.  I hadn't realised how good an actor he was especially when the surgeon decided to do away with him because he had the plaque! I, too, was collared. In the dock for being a witch having danced naked around an open fire calling up the devil! I reckon even the Devil would have turned away if that had been true! Anyway I had to perform that naked dance (fully clothed I'm relieved to say) to the jeering crowd. The performance by the actors was second to none and a must for anyone visiting York. No photography allowed so no photos to show, mores the pity.

We had planned to stay longer and do the railway museum but another problem reared its ugly head on that morning. Stopping at the Park and ride again, Ian turned the fridge over to gas and try as he might, couldn't get the thing to light. Checking the gas bottle and assuming it had run out, was very surprised to find one bottle full and the other still with plenty. He checked the regulator and then the pipe fitting. Turns out that the flexible hose was not allowing the gas to flow through. (Regulator was fine) The nearest caravan and motorhome dealer was Leisure World Group, Ebor on the road to Scarborough so praying that my freezer wouldn't defrost in the 2 hours away in York, got back under way as soon as we returned and headed for Flaxton Moor.

The weather on the way was atrocious. We had hail and very heavy squally rain in between sunshine. Quite bazaar for this time of the year.

Anyway we found the place, new hose purchased, Ian fitted it then and there and hey presto, the gas flowed freely once more.

So with a shortened visit to York today, tomorrow we head back once again to do the railway museum. Another night has been booked at the campsite because of our plans changing, and we may stay even longer, but it all depends on the weather now. Looks awful for the next few days!

And wildlife seen at this campsite,

Wild Partridge.

I'm struggling to think what could stop gas from flowing through the hose. I assume it's a high pressure hose tail directly screwed into the propane bottle? If so it would be subjected to 70 psi or more (depending on the temperature). I thought they are supposed to be replaced after 10 years, so if yours is less, it doesn't say much if the internal wall has collapsed. Even if a dead spider was inside it ought to have been blown through - unless there is a filter gauze inside one of the fittings which has got blocked. I'm beginning to think that dealers PDI's aren't worth the paper they're written on. I could tell you a few things about the 2 berth van conversion I bought early last year...

Yes, Dave your assumption was right. I suppose without dissecting the old hose we will never know. At least we had a caravan spares place nearby, very lucky for us.
