About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

And the mist rolleth in

Sunday 25th

What a late start this morning. Two things stopped us from leaving at a reasonable time. First, my brother was supposed to Skype from Australia at 9 am British time. (6 pm Aussie time) We waited and waited and eventually gave up an hour later. Then both motorhomes needed to fill with water and the overnight stop at the Morefield Motel had a water tap which we could use. Now I know there are slow fills on the canal network but this tap beats the lot! Took 30 minutes to fill Kev's and Gunda's motorhome tank and when it came to our turn it seemed to take even longer! By 11.30am we were finally ready to leave.

At Morefield Motel
Today we thought we would go to Gairloch, roughly 55 miles from Ullapool. It is on route to the Isle of Skye and we noticed a few waterfalls on the way. The first we drove right past not realising that the signpost, Corrieshalloch Gorge, was where we needed to be. We couldn't have stopped anyway, car park was full again (story of our lives) and we very nearly missed the second waterfall as well. No sign for this one as it was right by the main road and it was only because I noticed it s we drove past that we stopped. This time we could stop and a convenient dirt track happened to be nearby where we could pull over.

Progress was slow after that as every bend showed a view to die for. Every 500 meters or so we stopped to admire the scenery before us. Lunch was spent at a much better location than yesterdays!

Then on the approach to Gairloch, a  sea mist came rolling in. Just looked weird and quite surreal.

With the sun shining down and all wanting to have a lazy afternoon to enjoy the first warm and sunny day we had had for ages, we stopped at a campsite in Gairloch. Table and chairs came out and coffee made (a bit too early for beer and wine)

Hopefully, we will take the ferry across to Skye tomorrow. It's a ferry with a turntable so that will be a novel experience!

A few more photos on our route,

How on earth?????

 And wildlife today
