About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

It was only a slight mis-measurement.

Does anyone ever watch Nick Knowles and the big build? If you do you'll know about the little Irish Carpenter guy Mark Millar. He is notorious about getting his measurements wrong. Well today I've renamed Ian, Mark! He needed to cut a piece of wood to go down the back wall where the shelves are to go. He measured and then measured again. Off he trots to the workshop and cuts the bit of ply to fit. Back he comes and goes straight to the bathroom. Then a 'How on earth did I manage that?' came from within. The angle measurement to the window wall was all wrong. He still cant understand why his measurement was so out but with a shrug and a 'good job I've got more ply', off he trots again. This time he returns with the new bit and it fits like a glove.

While he was gone I stained the ply he put up last night. Hides all the tiles that were left on and although I didn't do an amazing job, no one but us will see it after the shelves are filled with towels, loo rolls etc. Just a coat of varnish to do and this section will be finished. If Ian keeps going at this rate, who knows, I might get to have a shower this week.

It's in the upper right hand corner that Ian's measurement went awry.

My staining was a bit patchy but hey ho no ones going to see it. Pipes all neatly hidden from sight with the new boxing.
And the newly cut and fitted board
And a couple more visitors to the feeder.
