About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

A foxy encounter by the sea

Gosh doesn't time fly when your enjoying yourself. Seems like only yesterday that I was waiting for Ian to return with the car and here we are a week later! The visit to Ian's sister, brother and then the  wedding was fabulous. Weather perfect, company brilliant and far to much food. Bang goes the diet again! Our nephew Brian couldn't have chosen a perfect wife. Gabriel was a delight and a welcome addition to the family. Brian's son Cameron was his best man, Gabriel's son was the usher and Brian's daughter Tia and Gabriels daughters were bridesmaids. Very much a family affair.

Gabriels son Ryan? I think that was his name. Her daughter in the middle (cant remember her name). Then Tia and Cameron

Alan, Ian's brother (L) Chris, brother-in-law and Sheila's hubby (middle) and Ian

Me with my sister-in-laws Angela, Alan's wife (middle) and Sheila, Ian's sister
Sheila and Chris live right by the Blackwater estuary near Burnham, Essex and the walk along the sea wall was not without its incidents. First horses escaped from their field and was roaming along the sea wall which made getting past a little hairy, especially with Alans large flat coat retreiver Josh! Jade wasn't with us though, as she would never have made the distance. We left her at the house gaurding the garden to chase off the cats.

Then on our way back a fox ran across the field as bold as brass. It stayed long enough for a few photo calls, which I thought strange until I realised it was hobbling on 3 legs so couldn't have traveled very fast anyway.

Avecet One of the many different birds seen on the walk

Having spent several days with Sheila and Chris we departed to spend a few days with Alan and Angela in Worcestershire. I love their garden. Its bug heaven for someone like me who loves taking photos. Angela wasn't too thrilled about all those insects invading her plants because being an avid gardener hated the thought of what damage they were doing.
Then yesterday we had a lovely long walk up and along North Hill quarry. Again left Jade behind but Josh came along and for every mile we walked he must have done double. He was one very pooped out doggie by the time we returned.
Will you look at that view! Spectacular.

Josh
So today Ian left early to return the car to Sandiacre. I washed the boat, emptied loo's and watered up. Then at about 10am I gets a call. It's Ian with the bad news that our tenants have gone away leaving both their cars on the drive, so no hope of getting our car into the garage. All he could do was turn round and drive all the way back to Stafford. Thankfully we could leave the car with the boat club for a few days and then Carole and Alan ( last year honeymooners) had a great plan They would take our car to their house and leave it on the drive. There it can stay until Ian is ready to collect it early September. What a great result. Means we could leave for the Blackboy rally without any worries. So finally by 1ish we pulled pins and headed for Rugely. Here we hope to meet up with Dennis and Margaret. After 4 hours we called it a day and moored on the outskirts of the town. Ian was soaked to the skin after a particular heavy downpour and even the thought of another mile in these wet conditions were enough for him to say enough was enough.
