About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Mid afternoon drinking session...not a good idea.19

Such a lazy day yesterday although Ian did make Anzac biscuits ready for when the grandchildren arrive. Looking out of the lounge window we were pleased to see that the development of industrial units and housing hadn't made it as far as the canal...yet.

Biscuits made and we walked to Morrisons, it's a little over a mile from Branston Water Park. We should have stopped at the A38 bridge, about half a mile before Branston Lock, its easier to get to Morrisons from there. But we sailed straight past and only remembered after we had ascended the lock. Still, it was a nice day and the walk did us good. Fully expecting to queue we were surprised that we were allowed straight in. So on went the gloves and masks, trolly wiped down and into the store we went.

I suppose we were used to the Asda shop with the directional arrows and big crosses on certain aisles showing a one-way system. At this Morrisons there didn't appear to be any thought on social distancing at all. The most noticeable thing as we walked around was that we were the only ones with face coverings and gloves. I'm beginning to wonder if we are the only paranoid ones, maybe we shouldn't bother either. My theory though is if everyone wore a mask than the transmission of droplets would be minimal. Anyway, we religiously kept to the list not stopping for anything else and was very relieved to be out and back into the open again.

The afternoon turned out sunny and warm, lovely. Went for a walk to see Jim and Jen. They had moored Dire Straits at the far end of the mooring but with us not wanting to moor under trees, and hoping to get sufficient sun power from the solar panels not to have to run the engine, we moored at the park entrance. An invite was issued for afternoon drinks and we didn't need asking twice. The towpath was wide enough for people to feel safe as they passed by and to be fair, not much footfall at that end of the mooring anyway. By 6pm we were all feeling a bit tipsy and dinner still had to be cooked. That fell to Ian as chilly was on the menu and he does do a mean chilly. Glad it wasn't me as goodness knows what I would have put in it. I couldn't even stand properly! Note to oneself. Do not start drinking in mid-afternoon!

This afternoon we expect our daughter, son in law and grandkids to visit and I have a feeling Ian will be getting JD as a Fathers Day gift. We happened to What's App the family to say JD was only £20 for a litre in Morrisons (Ian would have bought a couple of bottles but no room in the rucksack) and Christine came back to say Jd would be dads perfect father day gift.

Tomorrow we leave but not sure how far we will go. It all depends on Jim and Jenn, they like to leave early and stop early. That is good enough for us too and I may even start fishing again. Just need to buy a fishing licence online.

And wildlife

Greetings Irene & Ian,

You are quite right to be cautious.

You have to avoid virus everytime, it only needs to get you once.

Glad to see you out on the cut again - just wish we could be too.

Regards,

Graham

Hi Graham, I don't think folk are taking it seriously anymore, especially the youngsters. But seeing those of our age and older not taking precautions is just being plain reckless.
