About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Monday 8 April 2019

To the park we go.

Oh dear, we were that disappointed! Monday mid-morning, walked to the Butchers only to discover a very limited selection of sausages made and the stir fry I was after hadn't even been started. Seems Monday is not a good day to visit as the preps of the meats do not start until later in the day. We could have returned after 1pm but that was out of the question as we wanted to get to Branston Water Park before the visitor mooring filled up. So I came away clutching 2 Jerk season chicken portions and a huge pork pie.

On return, we upped and set off. Wanted to get onto the water point but was beaten to it by a boater setting off from his mooring near to the lock. Oh well, another waterpoint at Barton so that will have to do.

Dropped down from Alrewas Lock onto the river. Not much in the way of a flow today to help us on our way.

Alrewas lock onto the river section

Doesn't seem possible to get through, does it?

No Problem!

Wychner lock takes us back onto the T&M
Back on the T&M and we had to suffer the next 2.5 miles of very loud road traffic noise. Lorries and cars hurtling past on the A38, we both hate this bit and the sooner we get to the other end the better!

A very noisy A38. Can't get past it quick enough.
Bridge 36 is a very narrow turnover bridge and one of the most photographed I expect on this section. Bet newbie hirers get a bit concerned when they first lay eyes on it.

The last lock of today was Tattenhill. Such a pretty lock and with the sun on it today, looked even nicer.

Loads of spaces to be had at the Water Park and we choose one in full sun so the solar panels could be deployed. Having only travelled for 2 hours the batteries were far from charged.

Going to treat ourselves to a meal at the Bridge Inn lunch time tomorrow. They serve Italian meals, we rather fancy a decent Pizza, will be a change from shop bought ones.

And wildlife today,

Hi Irene and Ian,

That A38 is the noisiest road, isn't it?

You need to slow down, girl - otherwise you won't be able to go for drinks at the Lockeeper's Rest on Thursday!

When you are there, please pass on my regards and a hug to any of the people who remember the shy kiwi woman - Lyndon, Nigel, Dave ... Tell them that if I was there, I'd be buying a round!

Mxx

Hi Marilyn, We don't plan to be at Sawley until Friday and yes seeing Dave is the first thing on our list. I will definitely mention your name. I'm sure they will remember a very drunken woman staggering back to her boat a few years back! (and it was you that told me this story!)Anyway, we will raise our glass to absent friends and think of you both enjoying this years summer cruising season. Xxx
