About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Cyclists might have something to say to this!

Was'nt it a horrible day yesterday? Wet...very very wet...and what with that cold wind chilling one to the bones, well there was no way we were leaving this spot! Those boaters that had decided to brave the elements must have a destination to get to or I'm sure they too would have refused to budge. So Netflix became our friend and although conditions improved by the afternoon, we couldn't be bothered to move.

So this morning, and with much improvement in the weather, (although still cold) I locked FS through the stop lock leaving Ian to do the biz with the cassette at the facilities and then took the sharp right turn under the bridge to enter the Coventry Canal. Now, I'm not one to sing my praises (well okay then, maybe just a bit) but I did the turn in one go. Congratulations from Ian who had previously watched three other boaters also attempt the turn but without success resorting to forward and reverse manoeuvres to get around. To say I felt dead chuffed was an understatement!

Hawkesbury Junction
An almost ideal cruising day, not a breath of wind and the water like a mill pond showing off near perfect reflections.

Fields of gold showing the Rape in bloom.
Glorious don't you think? But then we came upon an unexpected sight.

Oh, how I would love to see what walkers and cyclists make of this!
There wasn't a sole onboard which was a shame really as we would have taken great pleasure in telling the owner what a prat he or she was!

Charity Wharf came into view. I have taken loads of photos of this wharf during the numerous years of travelling this way but occasionally I see something new or something I hadn't taken in before.

Is this new?
And of course, the heap seems to be getting taller.

Cruised past Marston Junction, the start of the Ashby Canal. Back in 2017 Water Voles were present. I took this photo then, of this one at the start of the Ashby canal.

Today I saw none even though an extensive program is underway trying to save them from this and other parts.

Marston Junction and the start of the Ashby Canal
The rain had been forecast for early afternoon, we don't like getting too wet these days what with the creaky bones and arthritis playing up so we stopped before it started. A quiet rural spot with fields opposite and to our right. Then we sat and waited for the rain to arrive....we are still waiting!

Todays wildlife,

Hi Irene.

Well done on the turn. It is a difficult one at the best of times.
Oh how I would have loved to speak to the owner of the cruiser and their idea of mooring up like that. I am surprised no one has let them go.

Hope all is going well, as you cruise home?

Much love Jo xxx

That turn brings back memories. On just our second ever day on Tumbleweed we came out of the stop lock with boats moored on both sides and as I was lining up to make the turn a boat came round the corner. I ended up under the trees then reversed in to the wall by the pub, all in front of a good sized audience. Very embarrassing.
Happy to say that since then I have always managed the turn first time but always send Angela as lookout to make sure no one is coming.
