About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Lovely day for a cruise

So when did an Aldi get built in Linslade? Ian discovered the store when Toffee was taken out last night. He found a cut through to a small park, a footbridge spanned the canal but instead of crossing the canal, a path led him to a road and over the road was an Aldi. In fact a small retail park with a Pets store, M&S food, and a B&M home store. Food outlet was Subway and all must have been built since we were last in this neck of the woods back in July 2020. (or we just didn't know it was there). We went for a look this morning, Toffee came with us as she still can't be left on the boat without barking. Sent Ian in for tissues and he came out with that plus a bottle of Aldi's own Baileys. That man can't be trusted! Still a nice tipple will await us tonight after dinner.

It was about a three hour crusie to Ivinghoe locks. It was above the second lock that we had chosen as our overnight stop, The journey was lovely, sun was out and the autumn colour of the leaves was a joy to behold. Very little in the way of traffic although we did meet a breasted pair by the boatyard before Grove lock. Thankfully the passing place was wide enough for the three boats.

Grove Lock

Ian found a windlass left on the beam. I expect it belonged to that breasted pair. He took it onboard, it's a long shot but we may see them on our way back and can return their property.

Above Ivinghoe lock we looked for a place to stop. A small section of piling just past the lock landing did us nicely. Well away from any boats wanting to use the locks, bur we did get a glare from a lady boater as she approached the landing. I think she thought we were in the wrong place.

By this lock a massive structure was seen. Was it to do with HS2? We did find out, something to with the film Wicked. I believe the set was being taken down, and all because of the actors strike. You can read about it HERE.

And seen on route (and by the mooring)

She is such a lovely dog.

I've looked at Linslade with Google Earth, and using the time slider, the site was bare earth in March 2017, under construction in May 2018, and open (with cars parked) in March 2020.
