About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Going home (slowly)

Tuesday 7th August,

The alarm went off at 6 am, by 6.20am we had joined a queue of cars and motorhomes already waiting. By 7.10am we were beckoned to proceed to the lower deck and by 8.00am we were sitting eating a full English Breakfast as the ferry started the 3hour fifteen minutes journey back to Fishguard in Wales.

Back on British soil again.
I mentioned yesterday about the slow puncture we thought we had. Turns out a screw had pierced the tyre, not going in straight as one would imagine, but sideways and once the screw was removed, the tyre went down pretty quick! Ian had pulled into a tyre place at Haverfordwest before the screw was pulled out but with a repair attempted by the nice chap in the garage it failed and the only option was a new tyre. Nearly a £100 lighter (ouch) at least it meant Ian didn't have to stop to use the compressor.

Not needing to be back at Langley for several days yet, I found a place to go visit for tomorrow. It's the national showcase centre at Abercraf, the edge of the Brecon Beacons. So our park for the night was not too far from there and funnily enough, right by some waterfalls. Of course, we walked to them. But oh my goodness, that path going down to the river was really steep. Loose shingle made it treacherous and hanging onto Ian nearly pulled him over a few times. And with so little rain here in Wales, the falls were understandably a little disappointing although on the first one, and if you are brave enough, you could walk behind it. We didn't bother.

This really doesn't show how steep the path was.
