About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Saturday's events at Droitwich

Yesterday evening the beer tent was full to overflowing. In fact, because the public attended the Blues music night, the queue for the bar stretched far outside the tent. Our band of merry men ( Jo and Keith, Jen and Graham plus two friends of theirs which I forgot to ask their name, ourselves and later Carole and Mick from the ECP and DA) resorted to bringing our own drink. We found a good spot outside the tent which was fine except we had to shout at each other to hold any sort of conversation. The bands weren't bad either so a good night was had by all. So to go back to yesterday afternoon. Ian and I walked about two thirds of the route toward Hanbury Wharf. Most of it along the towpath seeded with thousands of wonderful wild flowers. Only a short detour along the road and under the motorway bridge was needed. This section of the canal was very picturesque and I'm looking forward to travelling it on our boat.
Approaching lock 7 first of the narrow locks.

Locks 6 to 4. Top two are staircase.

Height restriction through the motorway tunnel.

Water level gauge in case of sudden flood!
Some of the locals living near the river had made an effort to tart up their cottages. Very pretty it looked too.

Throughout today various things were going on in the town. We went off this morning for walk around but none of the stalls were open. We saw some amazing buildings though.. Very quirky and some very nice murals on the walls

Afterwards I worked as a volunteer in the burger tent. Luckily I was asked to make the cheese and ham rolls and plate up the ploughman's lunches which wasn't half as hot as cooking the burgers. The temperature outside was about 24 degrees so imagine what it would have been like inside the van!!! After an hour everything had been done so I was free to go. I'm glad about that because I especially wanted to see the boat parade as Hadar with Keith at the helm and Jo as look out and fender offer, was joining in. I took loads of pictures and a couple of videos so that all of you that follow there blog can appreciate just how noisy Hadar's engine is-

Look out behind you!

Bottle neck!!!!!

Come on Keith, you can do it!

Do you need some help?
The evening was again sitting and chatting round the beer tent but we left before the fireworks started so that we could be with the Woofits before the noise turned them into quivering wrecks!!
