About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Rock profile. Lion or Gorilla

Last night the police turned up, they only stopped for a minute before driving off. 30 minutes later two boy racers raced up to the pier, stopped, revved engines making as much noise as possible. One stopped right in front of MB, Ian reached for the keys and checked MB was locked. We were concerned, especially as police had been present earlier. Was this a hot spot for youths? The motorhome behind us left, we debated whether we should too but just before we decided yes, the cars left with a roar and nothing more was heard. Glad we stayed because the rest of the night was very quiet.

No plans today other than find Tesco for cheap diesel. At £1.46 L it was the cheapest around. Before setting off for Wicks, we first decided to have a look at Thurso. The main high street had a variety of shops, especially charity shops and, what I call, bargain-basement shops. Ian looked for good trainers, the pair he wears now the sole is getting very thin (and they stink!) Nothing appealed, so he continues to wear the smelly ones and bought Febreze to spray inside instead.

We did call into the North Coast Visitor centre, which is also a museum exhibiting a collection of objects that tell the story of the county of Caithness from the geological period known as the Devonian (about 416 to 359 million years ago) to the present day. There was also an exhibition on Doonray the now decommissioned nuclear reactor. Ian was in his element and studied the control panel in much detail.

Heading toward Wick, another garage spied that also sold diesel at £1.46Lt, and it had a jet wash. MB was filthy, those flies had left nasty marks on the bonnet and sides.  Ian couldn't resist, MB had to be washed, so paying £3 got 7 minutes of wash time, not long to do a big vehicle like this. Boy did he move fast!

We only stopped at Wick to shop, then took ourselves off to Castle Sinclair

It was gone 3pm when we arrived, a longer drive than we thought because the longitude and latitude coordinates we put in the sat nav for the castle were wrong!  We were nearly back in Thurso before the penny dropped.

The car park was another of those 24 hour parking for motorhomes. Ian went to pay the £10, it appeared to go through, but no ticket was given. He pushed the button several times, nothing was forthcoming. Not sure what he did wrong, but suddenly the 'out of order' sign came up. So we have no idea if we paid the fee or not.

The walk to the castle was across heathland, we took the cliff path, a slightly longer way around but so much more spectacular.

I took this photo of a stand alone rocky outcrop. Gosh it looked like a lion profile.

Took another close up and now all I can see is a monkey or gorilla head.

Blue rope on the top of stack. Must be from climbers.

Dunrobin castle and gardens for tomorrow. It's a good 50 miles from here, so the plan is to have an early breakfast and get going before 9.

And seen at Tesco

Hope he is fully qualified!

And wild life

It's a Rock Dove/Pigeon.
