About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Joining of the waters

July 4th (election day)

Yesterday we stopped at a place called North Roe.  For £10 we could stay in North Roe and Lochend Hall car park and that included electric. One downside, the internet was rubbish as was the satellite TV. So far North the Satellite is much lower in the sky and even the slightest of hills stopped the signal from reaching the TV.  So it was not only a quiet night but early to bed too.

This morning a steady stream of cars started arriving. My first thought was dog walkers until I happened to glance at the hall.

Ah, a Polling Station, no wonder.

There was a plan today, first go and see the community garden at Isbister. It was a short drive further along the road and had a mention on Trip Advisors.

It was a lovely small garden and even had one of those food cabinets with an honesty box nearby.

The lanes leading away from North Roe were all single-track with passing places. Sheep grazed free and today the drive back to the main road was fraught with anxiety because the lambs were determined to run out in front of MB.

At the main road, We turned toward Lerwick. Tesco beckoned, our food stock was getting low. Shopping done we then treated ourselves to a takeaway because a burger van had parked right by us and the wonderful smells coming from it was just to good for us to ignore.

With the Ferry terminal in the heart of Lerwick we decided to try our luck and see if there had been a cancellation for Friday's crossing to Orkney. Well, the girl behind the desk was brilliant. She confirmed there were no vehicle spaces but did something that person on yesterday's phone call didn't do, put us on standby. She too advised us to come down on Friday around 4.15 pm, just in case. If we get a phone call in the morning then yes, we are on that ferry.

No rain fell this afternoon, a good walk was what was needed and we knew just the place, St Ninian's Isle. Its quite a sight to see and well used by locals braving the cold water.

As we walked out onto the strip of sand between the water, a sight was seen that we had never seen before. A Sauna on a beach!

We decided to stay for the night although slightly concerned that Ian had no phone signal. We will leave fairly early tomorrow and go down to Sumburgh Head. Ian was pretty sure he did have a signal there. The tide had turned too so at 9. 30 pm we watched as the sandy beach started to disappear.
