About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Self isotation day 6

April 7th

Felt on top of the world today, the sun was shining, the birds were welcoming in the new day and only eight more days to go before we can get out of the basin and go take some exercise.

Got up late, well past 9.00am and relishing in the luxury of Ian bringing me tea whilst staying in bed to read my book, but the smell of toast was too great to ignore and no amount of 'pretty pleasing' would make Ian bring me a slice!

Decision...No spring clean this morning, too nice a day to stay inside. The cabin top was a disgrace, so much dirt and dust presumably all coming from the movement of traffic on the road above. Spent a good hour cleaning both sides.

I can't believe some people are not heeding the governments warning of keeping distances. Today a gathering of people around the bench on the green including a young mum with her baby. Do they think this virus won't happen to them?

Cheese on toast for lunch. The grill is now working a treat.

Ian finally fitted the repaired alternator restoring power to the batteries. Not that we need the alternator at the moment seeing as we can't leave the basin and we are on shore power but it's nice to know that when we can we will be ready to go.

Healthy tuna salad for dinner with Soda bread made by Ian.

Getting a bit short on the Shiraz. No way will three bottles keep me going for another 8 days!  May have to talk nicely to Jen.

Removed the centre and bow rope ready for a wash in the machine. An old pillowcase secured with safety pins was a good way to keep the ropes together.

Watched Netflix again. Maybe not the best movie to watch during this pandemic. 2011 Contagion and scary that this was filmed 9 years ago and is so true to what is happening today.

And the swans still keep me occupied during the day.

It's very good to know you are well, Irene. Shame on Ian for not bringing toast to you in bed! Does he not understand that a man who can can also deliver toast?

I washed our ropes in a bucket before we left the boat in October - I haven't been brave enough to put them through the washing machine though in case it chokes on the algae!

And a good job on cleaning the roof - I did that before we left too, and I did note to myself that having a cream coloured roof is great except that it shows the dirt more than it did when it was black.

Stay well, sweethearts!

I will tell him of your disapproval, Marilyn. That might stir him to do better!

Love to both
