About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Charity cycle race stops our last leg on the Kerry Ring

We had big plans for today. Finish the last bit of the Ring of Kerry from Kenmare to Killarney before heading towards Castleisland and Crag cave.  Not actually on the Wild Atlantic Way but just one of those slight deviations we knew would happen. Leaving the site after a very peaceful night we again had to negotiate the very narrow width road to get to the main road. No sign of that dog so I'm hopeful it found it's owner. Yet again we met another motorhome but this time no convenient layby so Ian reversed a good 100yds back to a farm entrance to allow them to pass.

At Kenmare, our plans were scuppered. We arrived at the junction where we would have turned onto the Ring but was directed away from the road to Killarney. An event was taking place in the form of a charity cycle race going anti-clockwise around the Kerry Ring, all 175km of it and the only part closed to traffic was the bit we wanted to do!

Kenmare town centre
We wanted to turn left.
Check out the price of unleaded petrol. Deisel was 137.9

We pulled over to reassess the situation...hmm what to do now??? Then the idea of taking the long route to Killarney and heading off to Muckross House and Gardens instead.

Muckross House

The wind must be quite fierce to make the trees lean like this.
We again got caught up in the cycle ride on the way back to Killarney. This time the road we had to take had a weight limit of 3 tons on it. Oh 'eck!!! The Beast is 3.7 tons! Nothing for it but go steady and when we spied a coach also on the same road...well we thought,"if the coach can make it so can we".

Slow going behind this lot so much so that........

This cyclist overtook us!!!!

Toward the finish line. It was here we had to turn down the restricted weight limit road.
So after all the hassle of today the only site, we found for the night was a proper camping site. Probably a good job as our water situation was a tad critical. Took the opportunity to do a wash load and how nice it was to have a shower where the water could be allowed to run.

Think we may go back to Muckross House tomorrow to park up and take the bikes to Torc falls. Only 5km ride along some very picturesque parts of Killarney National Park. Then (fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong) we can finally make it to the caves.

Good to know that we are paying less for our diesel. The exchange rate is not bad at the moment.
