About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

The most Northerly point in Ireland

Even though the fair was in town the noise levels last night were very low. Maybe the appaling weather had something to do with the crowds staying away. Anyway, this morning and our last destination on the Wild Atlantic Way was to go to the most Northern part of Ireland, a place called Malan Head. My goodness, some of the roads we had to negotiate, single lane, the occasional passing place and many a hairpin bend. Must have been a good 10 km before we got back to anything like a decent road. Luck was with us as not one car did we meet along that route. We did do a sudden stop when a Waterfall walk was seen. Glenelvin falls was about a 1km walk and a nice short excursion and lunch stop on route to Malin.

Parking again was a bit of a problem and thankfully a turning point by the loos and we found a space further down the road.

I'm not sure what I expected to find as it was stunning in its own way but the concrete buildings, a military watchtower which was built at Banba's Crown in 1805 during the. Napoleonic Wars and a signal station also built at Banba's Crown about 1902, seemed a bit of a blot on the landscape. I know it's all about keeping these historical buildings for us to look at but personally, I prefer the landscape in its natural state.

And growing on the side of the road, this lovely orchid.

Had a text message from Argos to say our new aerial was ready for collection. High tailed it back to Enniskillen, parked at Asda and walked to Argos. Then it was back to that lovely spot by the lake at Ely Forest where after a bit of a struggle, the old aerial was discarded and the new put in its place. So nice to have TV again and being in Northern Ireland, decent channels to view.
