About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

One can only stand so much

We couldn't bear it any longer. The pong was enough to make your eyes water. Not the best idea to moor by the sewage works but it didn't seem to bad last night. The wind must have changed direction because it certainly seemed more pronounced then last night. We also had a problem with the drain in our galley sink. That stench was equally as bad and had been gradually getting worse as the days went by. Ian could put that task off no longer and a good prod and a poke revealed a mass of vegatable matter which had been festering for quite a while, judging by the look of it. Leaving Ian to get down and dirty, I thought I would have a walk down the Salterhebble Branch and take the two girlies for a run.

At the end of the arm
Having returned to FS and then tried to fish, I gave up as the pong got the better of me. So we upped and pulled pins to travel the short distance of 2 miles to Sowerby Bridge. Here we stopped by bridge 2 and walked to the locks to see about getting through Tuel Tunnel and the lock beyond. We had heard it was manned by a lockie but what we didn't know was that we had to book passage through the tunnel and lock. Only, though, if you happen to arrive on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Friday to Monday the lockie is always in attendance. Not wanting to wait until Friday, Ian got straight on the phone to C&RT and booked it for tomorrow at 11am.

The tunnel which takes you directly to the lock.

And at the other end.
So this afternoon we moved to lock 1 moorings in readiness for the off tomorrow. Having noted a wetherspoons on our walk to the town, and that tonight is steak night, it would seem rude not to try it out don't you think?

Echo (back) and Jade getting under our feet as usual! Ian cant even stretch out his bad ankle. The dogs come first in this boat!

I am playing catch up with boaters' blogs as I've had final grades to sort out for the last two weeks, for the courses I teach.

Ian's ankle looked pretty good in the picture. Fingers crossed it heals quickly.

To keep all the drains on NB Valerie flowing cleanly I sprinkle a good two Tablespoons of Bicarb of soda in the drain and follow up with a 1/4 cup of vinegar. It will fuzz up and I let that sit for about 10 minutes and then I wash this down the drain with half a boiling teakettle of water. That clears the grease and all the garbage and hair out of the drains and keeps them smelling fresh. I do this once a month.
