About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Northern Lights dairy part 2

Tuesday 25th Feb. Weather cloudy, 9deg

Wow no hangover!  Amazed because must have drunk nearly 2 bottles of red wine last night and Ian kept ordering double rum and cokes. Informed by Ian that Boudicca lurched alarmingly at about 2 am nearly depositing Ian on the floor and sending glasses, kettle, bottled water, cameras etc halfway across the cabin. I must have been dead 'cause never heard or felt a thing. Excess of wine????. Shades of Titanic in the ice fields perhaps?? Except we had no icebergs, or even snow for that matter being a warm 9 deg. Still no idea what happened but Ian thought it may have been a rogue wave. Captain made light of it saying it was a bit of a bumpy crossing last night. Understatement comes to mind. Breakfast early and then to the gym for a good hours workout. Kn***ered again and still no fitter but finding muscles I never had. Lunch at 12.30pm and while dining Captain told us to look Starboard side as we were passing a mountain range consisting of 7 waterfalls known as the 7 sisters. All rushed to get on deck only to be confronted by low cloud and mist and no sign of the waterfalls.

Seven sister waterfalls are amongst these peaks somewhere

Dance class at 13.45. Continuation of Social Fox trot and start of Cha Cha Cha (darling) Half way through another announcement to say we had just crossed the Arctic circle so dance abandoned while everyone rushed to see.  Traditional sounding of ships horn which deafened all those standing for'ard on deck.

Globe marks where we crossed the Artic circle

Relaxing afternoon before getting ready for Formal do tonight. Yep we have succumbed as the previous formal evening saw many people without dicky or dress suits only wearing casual jacket and ties. We may get asked to leave but we have been thrown out of posher places ( Raffles in Singapore because Ian had the wrong footwear!!!!)

Let in to dinner with only a few frowns from the waiters. Some ladies even wore trousers!! At least
I managed a skirt and, with Ian in his £4.99 black blazer from the charity shop, I thought we both looked quite dapper. Another great meal. 5 courses consisting of starter, soup, salad, main and desert. I now only have 3 courses while Ian still has the 5. Another night of entertainment but this time by a female singer Jane Beaumont. Not bad but don't think will go to another of her shows. Late evening quiz on 'firsts' and our team Jim, Jennie, Peter and Jean (the 32's because its our table number) had to do a tie breaker with another two teams again . Needless to say we didn't win. Plenty alcohol consumed again. Getting used to ordering wine and double rum and cokes without worrying about cost. Bed by 23.30 after scanning skies for The Northern Lights. Still nothing although cloud cover minimal. Fingers crossed for tomorrow..
