About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Northern Light cruise part 10 A wild and rocky night. and a day at sea and the most amazing food display

March 6th Thursday, weather rough seas. Choppy am reducing to moderate to calm pm

Another wild night with Force 8 and 60 knot winds. Glass of red wine shot of the bedside table, smashed and spilt the contents all over the carpet. Frantic mopping up with white hand towels and bathroom mat.  Got most up of the stain removed with hand washing liquid and a lot of scrubbing!  Stain still visible so told our cabin stewardess this morning. No problem as this is a common occurrence and can be dealt with. Phew thought we might have to pay for a new carpet!
Sea still rough and people suffering. Got offered a glass of champagne at breakfast as its the Captains farewell cocktail party tonight. Went down very well with our eggs and bacon. Off to the guest lecture by the very amusing Jane Davey. All about what the Norwegian have done for us. She is such an amazing person. Should have taken to the stage as a comedian.

Ship still causing some people problems. We are all having to do the drunken sailor walk trying to get around as seas even rougher at present. Oh what fun! Had a lazy afternoon up in the observation lounge drinking yet more wine and double rum and cokes  No problem for us as we are all inclusive but what I find quite bizarre is that if we want tea or coffee we have to pay for it! At least £2.20 a cup. Surly the wine and rum and cokes are more expensive. Cant fathom it out. Just have to keep drinking the alcohol then. Dinner tonight is formal dining photo so best put on my posh frock. Wont be going to Captains farewell party as no white shirt or dicky for Ian but can go in main dining room rather then the Secret Garden. Sea not so rough and Captain announced that winds have lessened and we should have a decent run back to Southampton. Meal as usual was excellent and highlight was the desert called Parade of Baked Alaska. All the waiters came out with a tray of the desert in each hand and on top was a small lit flare. They all walked through the restaurant singing Glory Glory Hallelujah to us and with the lights dimmed it was all quite spectacular.  If only I had my camera!

No quiz tonight as the entertainment was put on by the crew and staff of the Boudicca. Some excellent vocals by the waiters which would have won them a place in the final of X factor. Most on board are from the Philippines with a few from Thailand and Indian so we had a mixed bag of their song and dance culture. Brilliant night.

The brilliant voice of our Neptune Bar waiter.

At 23.15 an announcement was made to go down to deck 6 to see a food display put on by the chef. Wow wow and wow again. Photos will show why. Bed beckoned a bit earlier tonight although not by much, at 23 45.
