About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Where's that log gone?

It only happens to Ian! There we were moored on this lovely mooring when Ian decided to get the wood out from our top box and cut it up for out fire. As he stacked it by the fence, two pieces rolled down the hill and onto the farmers track below. Now I would just have left them but not Ian. No. He had to jeopardise his crown jewels on the barb wire fence just so he could retrieve the said items!!!

Spectacular views

This morning the sun came out and we could fully appreciate our surroundings. Last night was the first night in ages that there was absolutely no noise of trains, planes or cars. All we had was the occasional hoot of an owl. Wonderful!!!

Tree creeper

This is the second one I have seen. The first was when we were moored at Langley Mill in 2009. My picture is a bit blurred but I had only seconds to grab the camera and get this shot.Posted by Picasa

Leek Branch

The forecast was for rain later so by 8.30am we let go forward and aft and set of for the 2 1/2 miles to the end of the branch. Again the views were magnificent. I took these pictures just before we crossed the aqueduct over the Caldon Canal. Ian took the tiller and as we approached another sharp left hand bend he did excactly the same as I did earlier in the week and rattled a bridge hole good and proper. Now who needs the L plates!!! I had just finished gloating when the heavens opened. Thanlfully we had just gone through Leek tunnel and with the aid, for once, of the wind , winded round and headed back to a really lovely mooring overlooking the valley.

Hazelhurst Junction

This is a lovely area. Views to die for! TV reception impossible!! Goodness knows what will happen when they go digital. Analog wasn't to bad. In the end, though, we put our satellite up and even then the signal kept breaking up. We have decided to go up the Leek branch instead of carrying on down the Caldon. There has been notification on Waterscape of an unstable chimney near Froghall and in consequence both the canal and towpath is closed. We are hoping that by delaying our trip to the end of the Caldon the stoppage may have come off. Will probably give BW a ring later in the week to see whats what.

Canal Roundabout???.

Im not sure why this has been stuck in the centre of the canal. Maybe there is some sort of obstruction right in the middle. Its a good conversation peice though! As its by Stoke boat club moorings, maybe someone from the club could tell me why its there.

Wont you let me back on?

Jade definitely prefers to stay on the boat. I felt she needed the exercise but she stayed close by Ian hoping he would take pity and bring her back on board..

Stockton Brook Locks

Two very nice stone sculptures by the locks. Both portray the potteries industry.
We had planned to make Endon today but the weather turned windy and very wet, so we have moored just passed Stoke boat club. Had a bit of a mishap on the way here. The Caldon is very narrow in places and bendy and as I came round a very sharp right hand bend, there in front of me was very narrow bridge hole. I completely got my steering wrong and although I missed hitting the concrete, I ended up in all the undergrowth on the left hand side. Ian was not best pleased as the thick foliage marked all the length of the boat. He has threatened me with L Plates if I get it wrong again.

A worried Jade

What you doing down there Mum?

Now a nervous Jade!

All Ian asked her to do was to walk over the lock bridge. She ended up a quivering wreck!
Posted by PicasaIan telling her not to be such a wimp and Jade agreeing with him.

Staircase locks Caldon Canal

After spending a week in Stone we left on a warm sunny day and headed for the Caldon canal. We made the very sharp right hand turn onto the canal and after using the facilities and putting up with the smell wafting across the boat from the loos, moored up just before Bedford staircase locks. I was woken at dawn by wonderful bird song. No idea what bird it was but I can only say the song sounded as if we were in a tropical forest. As much as I loved hearing it after 20 minutes I could have wished it further. I needed my sleep time!!
We got underway about 10 am and after going up the staircase locks we suddenly realised the tiller was bouncing all over the place. So we stopped and Ian went down the weed hatch and fished out the inevitable plastic bags. On we went again only to stop again after 15 minutes. You guessed it, another plastic bag. Well for the 4 miles it took to get away from the built up areas we had to stop several times more. I can honestly say the first part of the Caldon canal is the filthiest canal I have ever been on. There was even a notice at the facilities block to say the canal cleanup had taken place at the end of January! If that was the case where has all the rubbish come from!!!!

Posted by PicasaAs the depth of the top lock was greater then the bottom lock, a by wash built into the lock wall took the excess water away thereby allowing the water to even out and the gates be opened. The only problem with that is the flow caused the boat to be hard up against the side and I had to put quite a bit of power on just to move the boat.

mystery solved

The strange duck is not so strange after all. Jo Lodge from nb "Hadar" has identified it as an North American female Wood Duck. I have looked it up on the Internet and found this picture of the male. Wouldn't it be lovely if a male could be found for this lone female.

What type of duck is this?

At the moment we are moored at Stone again. Had an excursion back to Gt Hayward to diesel up at Hayward Marina ( 81p a litre and cheapest we have seen on this stretch of canal) which took several days. We don't believe in rushing about so a few miles a day is sufficient. Got back here above Stone locks and as I was fishing again ( caught 2 good size bream) this bird appeared. Now I am assuming it is some sort of duck but if any one has any ideas as to what it is I would be grateful if you would let me know.

New plastic duck family

A few days before we left Sandiacre in January, some thieving person nicked mummy duck from our roof. We looked everywhere for her but to no avail. Then when we arrived at Trent lock Kevin spied another plastic duck bobbing about in the water. He managed to get it and after a good clean and a paint job the pair were back together again. They were so happy that they produced their first ducklings of the year and now they will all take pride of place back to where they belong,on the roof ( extremely well stuck down I may add!!!!)

Weird Fire

What a stunning blue flame. Picked up what appeared to be a rotten fence post and as it seemed relatively dry, burned it that night. Goodness knows what chemicals were on it. but it made interesting viewing for a short while.

Surprising what you see when you look up.

So which wise guy said there was no such thing as a bottle tree!!! This one is growing very nicely near Western Lock. When spring arrives we may well get a full bottle of fermenting beer and by Autumn it should be ready to be picked!.

Finally a fish!

And what a fish!!! After spending days dangling a maggot from a hook and catching nothing, along comes this fantastic chub. The wind was blowing waves on the surface of the canal and I very nearly didn't bother about fishing but I'm so glad I did. This was the only chub but I had a few small perch as well.

Great Haywood

Hello to Vic & Sue. Isn't it nice when you finally meet fellow bloggers. I have followed "No Problems" blog for some time now, and we met on a very windy day at the facilities in Great Haywood. Vic had lost his hat when a gust of wind blew it over the side, and then his glove went the same way! . Luckily the items were eventually retrieved from the canal and Sue, with a nifty bit of manoeuvring and with help from Vic & Ian hauling the ropes, managed to do battle with the wind and bring the boat to the side successfully. Hopefully our paths will cross again someday, but as we were both facing in opposite directions it might take a while. Posted by Picasa

another cold night

We woke to the boat creaking and groaning again. Minus 3 degrees temperatures over night and another 1/2" ice on the canal. We had thought on leaving our mooring here in Stone but have now decided to wait until the ice melts. After all we have had quite enough of ice breaking at present!! When we do leave we will be heading for the Caldon Canal and hopefully travelling to the very end. Only Froghill tunnel to negotiate. Air height is only 4' 4" and because of all our stuff on the roof I very much doubt if we will get through.
