April 6th
Out like a light last night, even refused another glass of red, gosh I was soooo tired. Bed was comfy but with that air con running intermittently all night, sleep was disturbed. Does this bod well for the Ghan with the clackity clack of the wheels throughout the night? Anyway woke this morning to dull overcast skies. It appears we may well be in for another storm, a bit sad really cos our dinner harbour cruise tomorrow is supposed to be under the stars. That may all change to below deck, we wait and see. Still surprised that the sunset last night didn't produce good weather today. What ever happened to red skies at night shepherds delight eh?
After a good continental breakfast we set off for Crocosaurus Cove. The spiel about it looked good, Bringing together some of the largest Saltwater Crocodiles in Australia & boasting the World’s largest display of Australian reptiles, Crocosaurus Cove is a must see attraction when visiting Darwin.
Most places in Darwin centre can be walked and this was no exception. 10 minutes later we found the place and it threw us all completely. I had imagined a wildlife park, not what appeared to be a big fronted building in the middle of the city. A huge plastic croc was outside the entrance. Photos had to be taken!
To say we were amazed on entry is a definite understatement. It was huge, having large holding aquariums of Crocodiles all shapes and sizes. There was also fish feeding, croc feeding, turtle feeding, reptiles to view and hold, in fact we spent a good 6 hours wandering around and the highlight right at the end was the Cage of Death! The brave or idiotic (haven't decided yet) went into one of the aquarium with a huge 6-metre male croc. Admittedly they were in the cage but nose to nose with one of those beast? Nop not even the intrepid adventurers that we are would do something as mad as that!
It was a great day and even my brother, who really didn't want to go and see the crocodiles, was delighted with what was seen. And that snake was the first he had ever held. Considering how fearful he was, we felt proud that he held his nerve and didn't freak out.
