About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Sparrows, not Gulls the new theives at the table.

 January 23rd

The stars were as good as we had wished for but oh we do have to stay up late to get the benefit. It was gone 11.30 pm before it was dark enough. Worth it though.

This photo was first thing this morning. Fancy waking up to that every day, wouldn't it be marvellous.

The gravel road back to Glenorchy was devoid of any traffic, no dust to contend with today. Stopped at Glenorchy for a look, not many folk about other than those adventure seekers. Pretty place with a war memorial to commemorate those from the area who died in the First World War. There was also a plaque commemorating those who died in the Second World War.

A cup of tea went down nicely at the Trading Post, and a selection of lovely sweet and savoury pastries on offer. We very nearly gave in but the temptation was resisted.

And talk about opportunists. I have never seen a Sparrow with a liking for frothy coffee but not only did it drink the dregs, its fledgling also had some of the offerings.

And this chap nearly lost his snack bar

He was totally oblivious to that Sparrow trying it on. The phone was of more importance.

I could have watched their antics all day, of course I took loads of photos, there will be more at the end of the post and maybe some on tomorrow's wildlife photos.

So the return journey, same mountains but different views and equally stunning. I really can't emphasise enough how beautiful this part of the South Island is. The water situation is grim though, stopping at a lay-by for a coffee it was so very noticeable that plants are dying of thirst, and I'm sure some trees leaves are starting to turn yellow.

The waterfall was cascading from the rock face. No access to it, unfortunately.

Back through Queenstown still full of tourists, still didn't fancy stopping and made our way to Arthurs Point. It was here in 2017 we did our first jet boat ride and from then onwards we were hooked.

So guess what???? Yep we have booked it again. Tour operators are Shotover Jets and tomorrow at 2.30 pm the thrill will be back, ooh I just can't wait.

A 360, massive fun and hopefully tomorrow it will be equally as memorable as 2017

And wildlife

Many decades ago we had a Guinea Pig which loved coffee - it would go absolutely bonkers as soon as it caught the smell. Around the same time had sparrows which would come in through the French Doors and take crumbs off the dining room table while father was eating his breakfast. Sadly, their numbers have dropped considerably since then, but there's no shortage of Blackbirds who argue over the food I put out for them.
