About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Tipping point

Moored last night at the Fox and Anchor at Cross Green. The meal was decent enough although portion size not massive and we felt quite pricey at over £12 each. For dessert, we shared a cheese board which was excellent and at £7.50 brilliant value for two. Four different kinds of cheese, grapes and loads of biscuits. Too much for us devour and a handy napkin acted as a wrap to take the cheese home.

Fox and Anchor
Pulled pins mid-morning and headed for Autherley Junction. Here it was a right turn onto the Shroppie. But before we negotiated the turn, the narrows had to be cruised through.

Autherley Junction

The usual chaos above the stop lock with returning Napton hire boats.

We locked down at Wheaton Aston and stopped at Turners to fill the diesel tank and at 70.9ltr felt it a good price. At bridge 25 a boat was causing mayhem trying to wind. One boat heading in our direction and us stationary in the bridge'ole. Must have been over 5 minutes before he got the boat around.

A lovely mooring spot presented itself to us but try as we might FS was just too deep for her stern to get in. So another 3 miles travelled before arriving at Gnosall. Got moored and found out Mikron theatre is performing there tonight. Do we go??? or do we stay to watch Pirates of the Caribbean hmmm.... decisions, decisions.

Oh, and I must show what happens when a speeding boat came past us. Must have been doing over 3mph and I wondered just how far FS could tip before going over on her side. Drawers and pictures ended up where the shouldn't.  We are lucky nothing else ended in a heap.

The drawer was secured under the sofa.

 And seen on route,
