About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Sunsets and misty mornings..

I count my blessings every day for this idyllic lifestyle and the sunset last night and early mist this morning was no exception. There is always a different view out of the windows and with no garden to maintain, lovely people to talk to and pass the time of day, glorious sunsets and autumnal canal mornings, the serenity, peacefulness and slow pace of life what more could a person want.
  Last night

 And this morning

Of course, there is always a downside. Wind, rain, snow, ice, enough to hunker down, close the hatch and curl up with a good book unless you're a hirer, that is, or need to be somewhere else. But the good of this way of life rules out the bad and I wouldn't have it in any other way.

Today we had drizzle followed by rain.  Expected I suppose seeing as we washed the port side of FS first thing this morning. Then it was showing signs of becoming a nice day and something we felt sure would be the case with last nights red sky. But Red Sky at Night doesn't always mean good weather to come, it seems. We walked the half mile to Anglo-Welsh to check if we could have an overnight mooring and also to ask if we could take Merlin earlier tomorrow than the normal 2 pm stated in the brochure for hirers to set off. Both questions were answered with a yes. Walking back the rain got heavier and it was decided to wait for a lull before pulling pins. This came after lunch and a quick getaway was taken. Unfortunately, the lull only lasted 5 minutes so by the time Ian had winded FS and reversed into the allocated mooring spot, we were both well and truly drenched.

The mooring spot.

A ledge runs alongside the towpath and with FS drawing 2ft 6" it's impossible for us to get right in. But the front was sufficiently near enough for me to get off at the bow.

On Anglo Welsh's permit holder moorings it wasn't long before we were challenged by one of the moorers. But introducing ourselves as Merlins owner, hands were shook and a warm welcome made.

So now ready for the week on the Llangollen. Weather checked for this area and it's not all doom and gloom. Some showers throughout the week but more dry spells than wet so fingers crossed the met office has got it right for once.
