About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Short run that took forever.

Because of the worry over Jade, we were again up very early. Jade never stirred out of her bed and it was only us stroking her that woke her from her slumber. I held my breath as she tried to get up but needed have worried because up she came with a big stretch which, to me, is a sure sign of whatever ailed her yesterday having disappeared, for now, at least. So another early start and as we were only making for South Harefield thought we would take our time. A good job we weren't in any hurry because we hadn't reckoned on nearly 3 mile, yep 3 mile, of continuous moored boats. We first encountered the start of the row at Cowley Peachy Junction ( Slough Arm ) and from then on it was a constant 2mph all the way. The first lock was full with a boat just entering at the top and with us having to wait, the Diesel and Coal boat Hyperion caught us up. He was serving customers as we crept past and told us not to wait because he could be hailed at any time.

Row upon row of moored boats. Thats Hyperion in the distance.
From then on we shared all but one lock even though he did stop several times. With all the locks against us and having to be emptied, he only missed out on Uxbridge lock and that was by a whisker. He came round the corner as we were nearly at the top. Ian lifted a paddle for him as he arrived.
We eventually made it to Denham Deep Lock. This is where Sue & Vic No Problem was stranded waiting for their cooling problems to be sorted. I must say I was intrigued to see this floating dry dock. It's also the one No Problem used. This must be the only one on the system, unless of coarse, anyone knows different.

As I mentioned earlier we only had to go as far as South Harefield. Roughly 8 miles and 4 locks from Bulls Bridge Junction. The reason for stopping here is tomorrow Ian see's the consultant for his 3 month check up. We have hired a car from Enterprise car rentals and they will collect us from the Horse and Barge between 9 and 10 am. So no post tomorrow other then a photo or two from my 'And finally' collection. Am keeping everything crossed tomorrow that the news will be good.

Really lovely mooring at Widewater Lock

And finally:-

Now watch closely son. Knock first to get their attention!

Not a bad attempt, son!

We're both glad to hear that Jade is back on an even keel today.

All fingers are crossed here for Ian's visit to the specialist too.

Relieved to read Jade is feeling better today. I swear Irene Ma Nature loves you dearly--she allows all her creatures to frolic in your presence. Glorious pics as usual.
