About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

It's the waterfall trail again

 11th November

Okay it was a tad windy last night but not enough to drop the top down. Only a few drops of rain as well so still awaiting the storm!

As we haven't as yet been to see any waterfalls, and those that read this blog know we are a bit OTT visiting any in the area. I found one way out in the sticks at a place called Waihi Falls Scenic Reserve. A good 70 km from Woodville and instead of going down the highway (much too easy) we took the scenic route which meant more unsealed roads to negotiate.

Slippage has exposed the tree roots.

Wooden bridge.

I did the map reading. Luckily a more detailed map of this area was found at an i Site and all the roads have names, impossible to pronounce (sorry David forgot the song) but got by anyway and didn't put a foot wrong. Found the place deserted. Apparently this is not a popular waterfall, probably because of the distance from any towns and the roads are all gravel but the falls are absolutely beautiful and deserves the visit. The waterfall is included into New Zealand Must See Waterfall's list.

Ominous skies but no rain fell.

This must be an old sign because now there are steps taking you down to the bottom. I think once it was just a very steep rocky track.

And at the top looking down.

Our luck is not with us at the moment. First it was the jet boat not running and now the swing bridge at Waipukurau on the Tuki Tuki Trail is closed due to collapse. See HERE for photos. Shame because that would have been our next port of call. Again we were at a loose end so headed off to Dunnevirke. We decided as the weather had now turned for the worse, we would find a proper site with power. On route, we were very nearly scuppered by this fallen tree. Three men in a buggy had just finished clearing a path.

The site decided on was called Dannevikre holiday park. It has an aviary and deer park. If the rain stopped I could go exploring. Maybe tomorrow then.

And wildlife

Swamp Harrier|Kahu I think.

Love the off-road adventuring! I think we will have to investigate the Waihi Falls.

It's always interesting (in the NZ/Dutch sense, not the English, by the way) that it's overseas tourists who show us so much more of our country than we tend to see! Keep it up, as you are sorting out some of our future itineraries ...
