About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

And still the fire rages on

Bit hectic first thing this morning what with cleaning the vans interior and then taking it to a car and dog wash. Truly, they have DIY dog washing facilities at the same place. Handy that 'cos there is now no need to leave the dog in the car with the windows open when going through the car wash. I jest of course because there is nothing worse than a wet doggy smell as well as wet seats.  I must say it all seemed very easy to use. Put your dollar coin in the slot, choose soap and use the brush which covers the car in lovely pink suds. All very well until a voice informs you that only one minute left to complete the task. What!!! We only just started. Never have I seen Ian move so quick. Then the rinse, deposit another coin press the button and you get two minutes with a jet wash to rinse off those suds. Blooming 'eck it just wasn't long enough and we had no more NZ coinage left. So final rinse was down to a dishcloth run under the tap in the van to get rid of the soap.

Made our way to Hagley Park in Christchurch. Such a lovely day and what better way to spend a few our last few hours in South Island.

Until the smog appeared. That fire was still out of control and now the smoke was heading toward Christchurch. Then leaving the park at 2.30pm to return the campervan to the owner, we saw how quickly that wind change had caused the fire to flare up again. So near to those properties too.

The fire line is very near to those houses.

Having returned the van and sorted out the misunderstanding when they tried to charge us for using a toll road in Auckland ( Another of their vans with very similar number plate to ours was the culprit) it was off to the airport where we now await the flight to Sydney. I hear from my brother that the temperatures have been up in the 40's. Groan...and there have also been numerous fires. So it is back to the heat, flies and all those spiders, snakes, ants, etc that are out to get you. Can't wait!
