About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Maybe Jade isnt quite as deaf as we thought.

Well would you believe it!! Another boat turned up late yesterday afternoon. It was John Cooke with the news the river  had receded even further and he had no problem turning into the Erewash. He joined us and breasted up on Nb Endevour. This made 4 boats being held on by our mud weight, center and stern rope. Goodness I do hope no more boats will be arriving as we may well all end up either on the other bank or stuck in the mud!

And then there were 4!

After watching Strictly we made our way to the cottage. In fact we sneaked out while Jade was asleep and left the TV and lights on just in case we had more fireworks. From a dog who freaked out at any sort of loud noise, she now only gets agitated when a very loud firework is let off right by the boat. So we really wasn't too concerned about leaving her. Anyway, quite a few boaters and society members had arrived and in the end the numbers had swollen to around 30. Still a far cry from what we normally get on one of these do's but we were kept entertained by our own society members with a mixture of 40's and 60's music. In the end a very good night was had by all.

Our girl group
By 11pm Ian suddenly remembered we hadn't gone back to let Jade out. There had been a number of fireworks going off in the distance for several hours but it didn't occur to us that there would be a problem. When Ian returned Jade was with him. A very worried Jade, panting, tail between her legs, wouldn't take a crisp when it was offered ( most unlike her. She's a Labrador for goodness sake) so the fireworks must have upset her after all. In fact when Ian opened our bedroom door he stepped right into a puddle that was half on and half off our mat. She must have been so frightened that she wee'd herself.  Both of us were mortified that we had left her all alone and terrified. So now we are both very worried because later this afternoon we are off to see the  Cirque du Soleil  at Nottingham Arena and wont be back before dark. So the TV will be put on, sound on fairly loud and the radio in our bedroom will be turned up as well. Seems she has more hearing then we gave her credit for so I'm praying that she's not put through the same experience again. Goodness knows what we will find when we get back if she has had!

And finally:-

It does look like that but apart from Viv and Paul, we had only just arrived.
Then the table was full of glasses of orange, coke, lemonade etc (wink wink)
