About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Crossing rivers by campervan and on foot

Friday 3rd.

Another wet and dismal day. Saw no Crocs but was a bit anxious when I made the dash to the showers this morning. Had visions of a croc lying in wait under the van. But all was good which is more then I can say about myself. Ended up visiting a pharmacist explaining my symptoms. All he did was sell me 100 Paracetamol to bring down the fever and throat lozenges which are supposed to help with a dry cough. Reckons I got a bug of sorts and only rest would sort me out. He advised at least 2 litres of water to be drunk throughout the day. Here's hoping tomorrow will see an improvement.

Ian spied another falls on our way to Townsville. I half heartily said I was up for a short walk. So along this dirt track, we went into the Paluma Range National Park. The Jourama Falls lookout was roughly 600 metres along the track, not too far but what we both hadn't banked on was the amount of rain that has fallen these past two days. So the first problem we encountered was water rushing over the roadway. Do we cross or chicken out? A car had made it, okay so we bit the bullet and surged through. This was by no means the only one to negotiate. Rounding a bend yet another to get through.

We parked and started the walk to the falls. Then we found the boardwalk awash with water Nothing for it but remove shoes and socks and wade across. For me, this was turning out to be a bit of a nightmare. Bloody mozzies were relentless in their attack. The only bit we hadn't sprayed with mozzie spray was our feet!

Eventually arrived at the falls lookout. I haven't done this photo justice but with the amount of rain we have had it was spectacular.

Jourama Falls

The walk back was a bit easier now we were heading downhill. But that river had to be tackled again.
I was very relieved to get back to the van. And we made it just in time as the heavens opened again and it rained for the rest of the afternoon

We found a campsite almost on the beachfront at a place called Saunders Beach. So far we have had two thunderstorms with a possibility of more overnight.

Irene,
For heaven's sake (well, yours really) take a couple of days and stay in a motel and rest. You have been travelling relentlessly for several months now and you need a break!
Get some Vitamin C, some Vitamin B6 and B12, some magnesium and some zinc and dose yourself up. And LIE DOWN!!!
M&D xox
PS Love to Ian too.

Oh, how I would love to be pampered and just sleep this bug away. Trouble is the time factor. So much to still see and do and the days are going to fast. So keeping going is the only option. I do feel so much better today although appetite is still almost non-existent. Not a bad thing. Could do with losing the weight gained whilst visiting your lovely country. Thank you for your concern. It is much appreciated. Love to you and David. Xxxx PS Ian sends his love back.
