About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Oh dear...another problem.

What does one say about things happening in threes? Well, two things have now happened, and we do not want a third!. Yet another set back as the car has developed an oil leak....from the gearbox unfortunately and being a 10y ford automatic it has a sealed unit, so we are unable to access it. It was the large and distinctive oil spots staining the grass that alerted us to it, and we had just reversed to the ball hitch as well. Unsure if it was from the car I drove forward and sure enough another splodge of oil on the tarmac. Damn, damn, damn!!! (the language was a bit stronger than that!)  Another night had to be paid for, good job the site wasn't full! Anyway, not much else to do today other than go for a walk. Found a great place about 1 km away called Lake Pertobe so more wildlife today than anything else. Tomorrow we need a garage who can look at it for us. Fingers crossed it's something simple to repair.

Crossing the line at Warrnambool station

How's that for graffiti.
And the wildlife,

Australian Fife canary and European Sparrow
Myxomatosis was introduced into Australia in the 1950s Seems it is still affecting the rabbits.
Looks like this youngster has it too.

Another Fairy Wren. Almost as common as our blue tits.
White-faced Heron

Red Wattle Bird

New Holland Honeyeater

White-Browed Scrubwren

It is either a Brown Goshawk or a Collared Sparrowhawk. Both look almost identical.

it could be a Brown Thornbill

Musk Duck

Garden Skink
A Moorhen

Love that moorhen photo!! Couldn't work out what it was till I read the caption! Very clever shot, Irene.

Now when are you two getting to NZ? We need to start planning your visit to us here in Waikanae and fitting it around the times I am away in Hokitika.

Cheers, Marilyn
