About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Entry to the staircase locks

We were told by BW that we were to be at the top of the staircase lock for 10.12am. They would then send us on our way to be at the pontoon for 2pm ready for the crossing of the Ribble link.

Hiding in the corn

The dogs were very hot so after this trek through a corn field we found the river and let the dogs have a cooling swim.

Heading for Preston

Preston is at the very end of the southern part of the canal. Bit of a let down really with hardly any moorings. In fact the only place to moor was at the sanitary station. Next day was our passage back across the Ribble so we made ready with getting the anchor out , life jackets and lashing all the roof furniture with a bungee.

Garstang show

While we were moored at Garstang we found out that an agricultural show was on. Ian and I with dogs decided to go and have a look. It was very good with many stalls and lots of livestock judging. Luckily the weather stayed fine even though showers had been forecast. Ian wore his waterproof coat and got very hot.

Another trip to Glasson Docks

We were desperate for diesel so as the only place to get it was down at Glasson again so we had to make another trip. Dennis and Margaret didn't need any so the said they would come with us on one of the boats, Dave needed some to so he came as well. 6 double locks all with really difficult paddles were done by Dennis Margaret and Dave, and it took us a couple of hours. To make it all worth while we had a fish and chip lunch when we arrived.

Dennis having a well earned rest.

Another picnic spot north of Galgate

I went fishing here very early in the morning (6.30 am ) and was lucky enough to see two otters swimming along the bank!! Needless to say the fishing was lousy. Posted by Picasa

Tewitfield

Not sure what to make of tewitfield. This is the end of the navigation and I was a bit disappointed. The moorings were really difficult and we had to have the plank out so the dogs could get of the boat.
