About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

We wake up Birmingham

Saturday night and considering we were in the heart of Birmingham, our slumber was barely disturbed.  Other boaters were not so lucky. Mooring near to the mailbox with its many cafés, and bars the disturbance for them continued well into the early hours and all this told us later today. Ha...we chose the right place to stay then! Oh, and we did find some grass for Toffee, not an easy task, but thank goodness for Google Earth.

So this morning we were up early. The Campaign Protest cruise was on today and instructions were for all boats to be moored at the Mailbox by 11 am. We left at 9 am and got the perfect mooring on the towpath side, ideal for Toffee to get on and off and for me to go wandering with the camera. By 11 am all boats were in place. We had to await a signal of three blasts of a horn and then all boats were to let rip and cause as much noise as possible. Gosh, it was loud! Poor Toffee got herself extremely worried and refused to leave our side. Still it only lasted for about a minute, we certainly woke up Birmingham! And then would you believe we were asked to blow the horn again at midday. More people milling about too, many with hands over ears!

Richard Parry, CEO of CRT attended. In fact, Richard was interviewed right by FS but unsure if it was for TV or just a PR exercise. We also got to talk to the man, What he said about the proposed funding cuts from 2027/2028 should make everyone sit up and take notice. If the Government doesn't budge then we might as well except that in years to come our waterways will become ditches!

So now for the photos, there's quite a few, as usual!

Good work, you two and all the others! If we had known that is what you were heading to Brum to do, we would have come with you, darlings! Always up for a bit of a protest, us!

When we stayed in Brum, we moored next to the Cycle Repair boat near the Marine world place - very quiet and peaceful.

Our favourite place near the city though was Edgbaston - such a beautiful place, and you would hardly know you were in a big city.

We have moored by Vale winding hole opposite Brum Uni. Apart from the trains, this is a lovely mooring. The only trouble here was we couldn't get TV so no idea if FS was a film star or not!

Hello Pip,
Our friend Jenn on Dire Straits videoed the interview and sent it to us. We did see it after all and FS was also in shot on another interview. Xxx
