About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

It pays to stay on the correct side.

Still in bed as the McDonalds went past, we waved to them through the bedroom window. A toot was the reply we got. They were literally going through the bridge to Black Prince service point a distance of about 100 mtrs.

Today we would be parting company, they to head for the Caldon Canal and us continuing to Westport Lake. This is not the end of our travels together, we will join them later but first we await the arrival of our son and daughter-in-law with Toffee. Three weeks we will be having her and I can't wait! Not until Saturday though, that's why we decided to cruise to the lake and have a night there.

Before we left, breakfast was had at the Toby Carvery. At £6 pp the buffet breakfast was all you could eat. Tea and coffee were extra at a tad over £2 but we could keep going back to refill the cups.

Waka Huia was still on the Black Prince Service point so a proper goodbye could be had. David was no where to be seen, he and Marilyn parted company to shop in different directions, Marilyn was back first.  Just as we were about to leave on FS a hire boat cruised past. 10 minutes later we too set off toward the Lake. Rounding a bend and past the potteries we nearly steered into it. Groan...not another mega slow boat! They did insist on staying on the wrong side of the cut. This became their downfall at a bridge when the diesel and coal boat Halsall came upon them at the same time!

They did let us past eventually, we had already been moored a while at the Lake before waving at them as they headed for the tunnel.

Tomorrow we return to the Toby Carvery. A table has been booked Saturday lunchtime for the family but unfortunately the Carvery is not dog friendly. Rain is also forecast so the garden seating might not be an option, we may have to leave Toffee on her own in FS. Fingers crossed we don't come back to a destroyed lounge!
