About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Third time to Portsmouth.

 May 3rd

Much better weather today, sun put in an appearance, and I was very excited that today my new camera was to be delivered to Currys, all I had to do was wait for an email. So for the third time this week we drove into Portsmouth, and for the third time we got lucky with the parking. We did have further to walk, but as I said in an earlier post, parking is very hard to come by for a vehicle our size.

The multi attractions ticket also included a harbour cruise, it was due to leave by 11.15am so we did have a 20-minute wait. Gosh, the wind was cold today, and we chose to sit right at the back on the upper deck. If only I could have had my camera then more photos, and better quality, would have been taken. But, trying to take a photo on a screen that was impossible to see due to the glare, well it was pot luck as to what I took.

HMS Duncan. She was on TV not long ago.

This battleship was to be taken to Turkey for scrap.

Although the harbour cruise was a there and back, the chance for passengers to alight at the Gunwharf Quays was another option. We chose that option because it got us right by the Spinnaker Tower.

For two seniors it was £30, this gave us access to the café, garden room and viewing area. A lift took us to the viewing area first. As today was lovely and clear, we could see the Isle of Wight across the Solent.

Ian took this photo with his phone, my phone is rubbish!

Isle of Wight

A glass panel was set into the floor and for those brave enough to step onto it.

My feet.

So to continue to the garden room, stairs had to be climbed. No lift, mores the pity. At least 40 which doesn't sound much but for this two geriatrics, it was like climbing Mount Everest! To think this time last year we thought nothing of climbing rugged terrain and steps, just to see waterfalls.  Shows what a year of inactivity does for one.

By now, the email had arrived with the collection number for the camera. Back we walked to MB, waved farewell to Portsmouth, and drove the 5 miles to Currys. This is a nice camera. Has nearly all the same features as my Lumix FZ2000, but only has the range of 25 to 400mm instead of the 20 to 480mm that the old one had. I have yet to have a proper play, but this was what I have taken so far.

Off to see Downton Abbey (Highclere Castle) tomorrow afternoon. First though a launderette has to be found. We are running out of clean clothes!

That’s not the Isle of Wight in your photo — that’s looking inland across the harbour and the Historic Dockyard towards Portchester. The Dockyard is great, though, isn’t it? We used Clubcard vouchers to get the multi ticket, and have been back to do things we missed the first time. But in spite of living only a few miles away, I have never been up the Spinnaker Tower!

Interseting phone pics of your amazing tower visit, but your wildlife pics on your camera are the best!

Oh, thanks for the correction, Adam. I must remember to amend that post.
