About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Look who came past

 8th Jan

Early this afternoon we heard banging and crashing which could only mean one thing, a boat was coming. Wow, it was CRT's workboat. Well, we couldn't just watch them go past so it was a dash to the back hatch, opened it quickly and asked the question. Where had they come from? We were really surprised when Fradley was mentioned. A planned stoppage on the Oxford was their destination and with storm Goretti arriving later, (bringing with it, it's 90 mph winds, rain, sleet and possible snow in the Midlands), they would not be venturing out tomorrow. To give them any chance of arriving on time, despite the ice, had to travel today. What it does mean is we may now be able to leave on Saturday as no more freezing temperatures have been forecast and that workboat has broken the ice nicely, making a channel for us to follow. Surprisingly, as the water settled, noticed the ice was still thicker than we had first thought, at least 1/2 inch, even though a steady thaw had started yesterday and had carried on overnight.

So we have battened down the hatches, plenty of coal to hand, and now await the storm. That will be something to talk about tomorrow.
