The Great Ouse Lock

I came across this lock while walking the dogs. At first I thought I was seeing things. What is a lock doing in the middle of nowhere? Apparently there were 6 locks in the flight and it was a temporary crossing of the Ouse before the Iron Aqueduct was put in.
